AleSmith Grand Cru really needs to be tasted to be truly appreciated. Toasty, caramelly flavors, as well as flavors imparted by the Belgian yeast strain, predominate over a tapestry of subtle nuances. Winner of the blue ribbon at the 1999 California State Fair, it is a thing of beauty. It is available in 750 ml. champagne bottles. Appearance: Crystal clear (when served properly), with a toast-brown color. Flavor: Starts with the tangy flavor of our championship Belgian yeast, then fades to a medium-light flavor of vanilla, caramel and chocolate. Finishes dry and well-balanced with a slightly toasty flavor. Aroma: Vanilla and chocolate aromas predominate, along with the Belgian yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Clean and crisp, medium-bodied. Warmth from the high alcohol content makes it feel like a fine wine.

Bottle from Whole Foods in Beverly Hills--host is taking a nap so here we go. Unremarkable caramel color, very hazy, some bubbly beige head that won’t last very long. Aroma of brown sugar, lemon, champagne, alcohol, plum--taste has strong fruit, wet sugar, plums. Thinnish body.

Clear ruby brown with a small off white head, fading quickly. Faint spicy aromas with some nutmeg and light clove. Light carbonation, velvety palate, nutmeg, light herbal notes, caramel finale. Pretty easy drinking for the style. Alcohol very well-hidden.

Drank 16-8-2014 on a tasting with Thierry, Marijn, Tijs, Rik, Lennart and Bram during our holiday in the Ardennen. Compelling, grabbing taste. Sweet, with a strong and dominating alchol taste. Nice sweet finish. Light brown color with a bit yellow foam.

750mL Champagne bottle Bottled on 04/02/14 Darker than expected with a clear amber body & medium sized creamy white head that holds. Plenty of spicy, clovey, peppery phenolic character on the nose; pear esters, fragrant floral notes combining with toffee & toasty malts. Full body, good creamy carbonation, doesn’t give away too much of that big abv straight away. Yeasty character takes hold again on the palate; white pepper, ripe pear and bananas, clove & cinnamon, bread dough, herbal hops with a backbone of pale toffee sweetness. Dry finish, moderate bitterness, a touch of booze warmth lingers. Nice enough Belgian, not amongst the top of the style, but still darn nice.

2013 bottling of this brown beauty with gold highlights, creamy tan head and spare, fine carbonation. Silky texture gives up classic Belgian style dark fruits like date and raisin. Caramelly and warming. A bit of dryness, pale-fruit tang and winey acidity balance it out, quite a fully realized rendition in the aroma and taste and palate.

Aroma was yeast, raisin, bits of banana esters, thick caramel maltiness. Taste has spicy caramel maltiness, dark fruits, estery yeast. Not much carbonation. Nice. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
