Grand Cru is a dark chestnut-colored Belgian-style Ale with vibrant fermentation aromas of fruity esters and spicy phenols. A sweet caramel malt, raisin, and plum-like character combines with the complex fermentation profile of our Belgian yeast strain and hints of bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Its full body and velvety mouthfeel make for a slow and satisfying drinking experience. Grand Cru is meant to be savored and will age nicely.

Mahogany color, dark, with small sized creamy head. Nice aroma of caramel, mature, with a light scent of dark fruits, vanilla and wood. Bold structure; strong caramel and malt flavor, quite sweet, with a light fruitiness and some late liquorice; low bitterness; in the final the alcohol warmth is clearly perceived (maybe too much). Similar to many common Strong Ales from Belgium, nothing spectacular, but a solid brew indeed.

LCRBM2. Hazy chestnut colour with no head. Subtle sour aroma. Good toffee and good hops. Good raisin fruit. Citrus stops it being flabby. Hops are excellent. This took me a bit by surprise and I very much liked it. Went back for more.

Bottle, 75cl. A big, off-white to light beige head sits on top of an unclear, reddish dark amber body. The aroma has dried fruits, caramel notes, some beef stock, a touch of roasted malts and alcohol, and some faint sourish touch. The flavor isn’t much badder, balancing sweetness, bitterness and sourness in a very nice way. Some roasted malts, a solid dose of fruityness and sweetness, some sour hints in the far back, as well as sugars and berries. Full-bodied, dry and sweet, with a carbonation level that suits it well. Overall, certainly a beauty, which isn’t unusual for an AleSmith beer. 120107

A: The pour is a slightly cloudy amber color with a very thin off-white head, sort of khaki color. S: Plenty of sweet caramel and brown sugar and perhaps even more sweet, dark fruits. Some plums, figs, dates, and cherries, but a fair amount of alcohol as well. T: A great toffee and brown sugar component along with some caramel. This provides a nice sweet, malty base and the dark fruit flavors just sort of sit on top. Somehow, the alcohol is a bit more pronounced than on the nose. M: The body is medium with a really quite smooth carbonation. D: I would have enjoyed this quite a bit more were it not for the obvious alcohol presence. This might be a good one to age and allow to mellow.
