COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Grand Cru is a dark chestnut-colored Belgian-style Ale with vibrant fermentation aromas of fruity esters and spicy phenols. A sweet caramel malt, raisin, and plum-like character combines with the complex fermentation profile of our Belgian yeast strain and hints of bittersweet chocolate in the finish. Its full body and velvety mouthfeel make for a slow and satisfying drinking experience. Grand Cru is meant to be savored and will age nicely.

Bottle, 75cl. A big, off-white to light beige head sits on top of an unclear, reddish dark amber body. The aroma has dried fruits, caramel notes, some beef stock, a touch of roasted malts and alcohol, and some faint sourish touch. The flavor isn’t much badder, balancing sweetness, bitterness and sourness in a very nice way. Some roasted malts, a solid dose of fruityness and sweetness, some sour hints in the far back, as well as sugars and berries. Full-bodied, dry and sweet, with a carbonation level that suits it well. Overall, certainly a beauty, which isn’t unusual for an AleSmith beer. 120107

LCRBM2. Hazy chestnut colour with no head. Subtle sour aroma. Good toffee and good hops. Good raisin fruit. Citrus stops it being flabby. Hops are excellent. This took me a bit by surprise and I very much liked it. Went back for more.

Bottle at CBC, London, thanks to Warren. Pours hazy, dark ruby with a sturdy, creamy white head. Aroma hold caramel, Belgian yeast and candi, some leafy and herbal hops. Very sweet flavor, caramel and toffee, toasted candi and malts, light herbs. Full bodied with fine to average carbonation. Fairly warming finish, lots of sweetness, brown and toasty sugar, caramel and toffee, slight herbal bitters, rich cake, mild yeast. Excellent beer.

While it may be doubtful that I can match the sheer verbosity of my fellow raters with regards to this beer, I shall give it the old college try. Slightly hazy, red colour; huge malt aroma; flavour of sweet peaches, plums, toffee, with a vibrant fruitiness and a big, deep malt. In five years, this will go Gale’s POA on you. Again, this was a Gusler special.
