3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
750 ml bottle from Ludlow Wines, purchased a few years ago. 2009 probably, 2010 at the latest. Pours a cloudy amber color with a small off-white ring for a head. Aroma of dark and dried fruits, brown sugar, caramel, leather, and cookies. Flavor of dark fruits, caramel, brown sugar, graham crackers, apples, sweet bread, and a little cardboard. Medium-bodied, with a sweet, bready mouthefel and moderate carbonation. Iíd be interested to try other vintages of this to see how it does fresher and older.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
from 750mL, 2-3 years old
Really cloudy brown red pour with very little beige head. Deep but smooth sour scent; cherry, apple, and dark fruits. Tar-y molasses, carmel and cinnamon as well. Soft carbonation, mouthfeel is slightly acidic but thick, astringent finish. Boozy flavor, some peat and brown sugar or molasses, yeast wheatiness, banana esters. Very strong, malt-forward belgian with wine scotch/scottish ale elements. A little watery, may have been better with less age.

I tasted the beer and wrote a big damn notice about it, then the page refreshed and it was gone ... Anyway the beer is really good. A good body and mouthfeel. Taste is well balanced and the alcohol warming.

Bear in mind that although I love Belgian style beers, I detest anything thatís hop forward in its profile. That said, AleSmith Grand Cruís flavor begins with a touch of caramel, which almost immediately gets overwhelmed by a grapefruit-like sourness. This, in turn, gives way to a bitter, dry hoppy flavor that lingers long after youíve swallowed the beer. Given the very high ratings, perhaps I got a bad bottle, but Iím in no hurry to ever drink this beer again.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Clear ruby brown with a small off white head, fading quickly. Faint spicy aromas with some nutmeg and light clove. Light carbonation, velvety palate, nutmeg, light herbal notes, caramel finale. Pretty easy drinking for the style. Alcohol very well-hidden.

Drank 16-8-2014 on a tasting with Thierry, Marijn, Tijs, Rik, Lennart and Bram during our holiday in the Ardennen. Compelling, grabbing taste. Sweet, with a strong and dominating alchol taste. Nice sweet finish. Light brown color with a bit yellow foam.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
750mL Champagne bottle Bottled on 04/02/14
Darker than expected with a clear amber body & medium sized creamy white head that holds.
Plenty of spicy, clovey, peppery phenolic character on the nose; pear esters, fragrant floral notes combining with toffee & toasty malts.
Full body, good creamy carbonation, doesnít give away too much of that big abv straight away.
Yeasty character takes hold again on the palate; white pepper, ripe pear and bananas, clove & cinnamon, bread dough, herbal hops with a backbone of pale toffee sweetness. Dry finish, moderate bitterness, a touch of booze warmth lingers.
Nice enough Belgian, not amongst the top of the style, but still darn nice.
