Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer’s dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

750 ml bottle. Pale golden colour with a thick white head. Aroma is very sweet and spicy. Rich coriander spice over a very strong yeasty spiciness. Clove, coriander and a sweet peachy/apricot aroma. The flavour is quite lean and peppery with nice spicy yeast notes throughout. Clove, pepper, bubble gum, and pale Belgian malt. A bit of candi sugar character in the back. Lightly prickly mouthfeel. A strange hybrid of Duvel and sweetish tripel. Warming gives a bit of honeyish character. It’s a very tasty beer but it lacks a character of it’s own.

Clear golden honey color w/ champagne bubbles. Aroma of sweet malt, mixed fruit, and alcohol. Immediate sweet and spicy coriander taste gives way to green apple and yeast tastes and finishes dry.

Nice golden color.Fruit and spice flavors with sweetness. Not much alcohol comes through. Belgian tripel like. Pleasant brew but not the best by Alesmith.

Bottle. Pours with a yellow color and medium head. Aromas of bread, yeast and citrus fruit. I could not detect much of the coriander in the flavors, rather a more standard flavor profile. I liked it but based on their description I expected more. Alcohol is definitely noticeable and maybe a bit too dominant. Not the best Alesmith has to offer.

Moster head, probably from the pour. Cream head with good lacing, Nice, nice corriander. Mellow and sweet. The alcholic strength is really well hidden. A little hidden bite in the background. I’m not sure what from, possibly the hops trying to fight through the sweetness. Great beer!

Another very alcohol forward belgian style. Overripe white fruit in the nose with a subtle coriander and grains of paradise character. Earthy and herbal palate with a preponderence of alcoholic heat. ripe apricot and alcohol finish.

Reminded me a bit more of a tripel than a true Belgian strong ale. Nice gold color with an off-white head that brings out a light tingly citrus nose, with lemon, and creamy malts, with yeast. Initial flavors have hints of orange spice and the coriander/cilantro comes through in the background. The yeast is present as the flavor dissipates, ending with a nicely carbonated palate with a medium texture. A decent impersonation of a Belgian strong ale, and the coriander makes it unique.

750mL bottle, no date. My bottle claims 11%. Pours a clear effervescent honey golden with a staying creamy eggshell head. Aroma of cookie dough, Belgian yeast, lemon zest, a bit of dust, light pepper and spices, and peach. Flavor is pretty spicy and alcoholic up front, lemon and dust come in next but take a backseat to the big candi sugar, yeast, and sugar cookie dough towards the lightly dry finish. A little too sweet, but the alcohol helps this out. Highly carbonated with a medium body. I did think this was pretty decent, though my gf wasn?t a fan 7-4-7-3-14. . . . . Rerate from Odeed, 2000. This has none of the extra sweetnees at all. There is a good amount of Belgiany yeast, coriander and light honey. A litte lemon is also present. I can’t pick up on any oxidation at all--much better than the newer versions.
