COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the AleSmith incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Horny Devil is an authentic Belgian Style ale, from the Belgian candi sugar right down to the yeast, a Belgian strain from a Trappist monastery in Belgium. In addition to the malts, candi sugar and fresh hops, there is also a little added twist from coriander seeds, which impart a refreshing citrus flavor to an outstanding ale. Belgian ale lovers around the world have raved about Horny Devil, and you will too.

A lemon coloured fizz fills the glass as the golden liquid falls from the bottle. The fizz settles into a short off white foam atop a brilliant golden-orange body. Ripe banana flesh aroma with oranges, lightly toasted coriander, alcohol and white grapes. Strong alcohol on the tongue, with lots of sweet sugar and bananas. Nicely carbonated and smooth, but I must admit I was expecting a little more complexity in the flavours. . .

A very funky, spicy, vegetal nose dings this one's rating a bit, but once past that, this dark yellow beer proves to have a pleasant flavor--sweet, with strong coriander notes, some phenols, caramel, and a slight bitterness. Notable level of alcohol, leaves a dry finish with a slightly chocolatey aftertaste.

750 ml. Bottle. Poured a golden amber color with a small white head which faded quickly. Tastes like every other Belgian beer I've ever had. It has that sickening sweet, yeasty taste. I must say that it hides the 11% ABV very well.

No real head on this beer. It is a very clear golden color. There is a bit of weird aroma emanating from my glass, I am not quite sure what it is though. It tastes a bit cidery. It is thin bodied, lightly alcoholic in the finish, and there is a light sweetness running throughout. I detect an astringent mustiness as well. This really needs to be highly carbonated, this is just lightly carbonated. Does this get better? It must, right? Not too interesting at all. So disappointing coming from this brewery, it is in fact a drain pour for me, I have much better things in the fridge waiting for me.

Initial pour yields a completely clear, golden solution, with a thin, quickly diminishing head. The addition of yeast adds cloudiness and quite a bit of orange. The aroma is quite sweet. Candi sugar, coriander, white pepper, alcohol, fruity esters and just a touch of hops. An average mouthfeel. Spicy flavor of strong coriander, sticky sweet fruit (apple, pear, oranges), the yeast is doughy and slightly spicy. The alcohol warms the body and combines to produce an interesting, dry finish. A strong belgian style beer, very reminiscent of other Belgians I've had, but it's still just not my thing.

Golden, smells like coriander, not much carbonation. Flavor is coriander over a simple sweet barleywine, not very impressive.

A light tanned leather color with a small non-lasting white head. This pours thick and looks flat even though I can tell that there is carbonation. A strong alcohol, Belgian yeast aroma. Some spices( typical Belgian spices pepper mainly, but I could not detect any corander as the label states). Alcohol taste, alcohol viscosity. Unlike Trappist beers which entice you with their subtlety this one is more like a slap across the face. IMO I think this would be an all around better beer with less ABV.

Pours a golden yellow color with light head and average lacing. Aroma has hints of bitter hops, corriander and STRONG of hops. Flavor has a similar qualities in it with bitter hops and a sweet finish bringing up the back 40. The hoppy aroma/flavor in this reminds me of the hops left at the bottom of the kettle after homebrewing an ipa. Tasty, very tasty. Thanks cquirosa!

Sham (1845) - Seattle, Washington, USA - OCT 22, 2003
Pours a nice golden color with lazy carbonation rising to the surface. Slight malt in the nose, nice tones of fruit as well with a touch of alcohol. Oh, very nice flavors. Candi standing out as well as fruit and malt. Coriander backing all this up. Very nice and light palate with just a touch of alcohol. Damn nice.

Good Belgian strong ale. Spicy, malty, hoppy, and coriander flavor. Finish is smooth and dry.
