COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the AleSmith incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Horny Devil is an authentic Belgian Style ale, from the Belgian candi sugar right down to the yeast, a Belgian strain from a Trappist monastery in Belgium. In addition to the malts, candi sugar and fresh hops, there is also a little added twist from coriander seeds, which impart a refreshing citrus flavor to an outstanding ale. Belgian ale lovers around the world have raved about Horny Devil, and you will too.

Couleur blonde tirant vers le dorée, apparence claire et semblant pleinement filtrée. Arômes de coriandre, de levure, de fleurs et d’esthers. La signature et le caractère des levures sont fidèles au style d’origine. Les saveurs de miel, de fleurs et de bois perdent leur délicatesse parmi tout le sucre présent. Réchauffement prononcé de la part de l’alcool, carbonatation active et piquante. GABF 2005.

Bottle shared. 750ml. Pours clear amber with white listing head. Bread Sour, yeast, coriander, alcohol aroma. Biscuit sweet flavour with bread, vanilla. Crisp finish. Alcohol is well managed and. Good beer.

Appearance: Clear amber body with a creamy white head.
Aroma: Light aroma, yeasty with coriander and orange peel.
Taste: A little spicy with orange throughout and hints of caramel.
Palate: Full-bodied with moderate carbonation.
Overall: Drinkable like an imperial wit. Forgettable though.

UPDATED: SEP 15, 2014 Bottle at bar. Amber color, white head. Bitter taste with citrus, earthy notes, hops, toffee and grass. Bitter finish with hops, earthy notes and citrus. Good brew.

75cl bottle shared in a tulip glass. Pours a dark golden colour with an extremely short lived white head - disappearing almost immediately. Aroma is powerfully sweet and (Belgian) yeasty which is wonderful and the best aroma of any golden ale I have tried. Appearance is marked down due to the lack of head and carbonation. Taste is typical Belgian tripel/golden ale turned up a notch or two with banana flavours giving way to a substantial presence of coriander in the (not so) dry finish. A very powerful brew in every regard - clearly a lot of ingredients went into this. The closest I could say would be spicy balance of La Chouffe crossed with the powerful flavours and alcoholic burn of Maredsous Tripel.

Well, this is a rather curious adventure in cellar-cleaning. It dates back to 2006, when anything Alesmith was some kind of minor whale, or porpoise at least, here in Seattle. At the time, Alesmith (1) wasn’t distributed in the state and (2) had a legendary status head-and-shoulders above just about anything else brewed in the country. It was also before the TSA carry-on liquid ban. So I connived my friend Marc into bringing a bottle out to Seattle when he visited from Boston. And I put it into my cellar, a rare treasure. And I saved it...and saved it...and Alesmith arrived in Seattle...and it got pushed to the back of the shelf...and eight years later, here we are. I’m sure it hasn’t net improved, but at 11%, it just might be able to handle the age.

But it opens without the faintest puff, and pours completely flat (I won’t dock it for that, given the age). Yellow-brown color, no head obviously, and no lacing rather to my surprise. Nose of caramel with hints of coriander. The alcohol, while still present, has melded in pretty nicely. Sweet but not rich; the candi sugar is prominent. Hops aged beyond recognition. Slight sour tinge to the close.

I don’t understand why this needs to be 11%. Maybe 8% would make sense. This just doesn’t merit the excess.

Deep golden, light coppery appearance with a small white lacing head. Spicey aroma, full of belgian yeasts and of corse the coriander. Strong body, at the first slip the malt arrives but after a while the dry flavor profile stays. Very spicey character, full of coriander, balanced tartness. Fantastic.

Ok, beer nro 1000. Clear golden, lacing ring, practically no head. Aroma is fresh fruity, sweet white winey notes, coriander, alcohol but not disturbingly. Medium body, belgian feel, bit oily, sweet like strong wine, soft, long finish, fruity, nuanced, Interesting. Nuanced, tasty, interesting, balanced.

Golden color, nice thick head. Great yeasty aroma. The flavor is full of Belgian spices, yeast and bread, a touch of sweet. Good stuff.
