COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
This is the AleSmith incarnation of a Belgian Strong Ale. Horny Devil is an authentic Belgian Style ale, from the Belgian candi sugar right down to the yeast, a Belgian strain from a Trappist monastery in Belgium. In addition to the malts, candi sugar and fresh hops, there is also a little added twist from coriander seeds, which impart a refreshing citrus flavor to an outstanding ale. Belgian ale lovers around the world have raved about Horny Devil, and you will too.

UPDATED: SEP 2, 2005 2004 bottle. Good bright coppery-orange colored body, hazy with a big white head and fair lacing. Aroma of heavy coriander, pils malt (honey) some wet grass clippings. Flavor begins with a big burst of dry citrus, alcohol and powerfully overbearing coriander. I’m not getting much complex yeastiness, though it is distinctly Belgian. Lemon, dough, honey, lots of candi sugar and residual sweetness. Mouthfeel is thick, viscous and lightly syrupy. Body is medium-full. Finish is dry to the extreme, astringency, no doubt from the coriander and alcohol. For all of the good ingredients in here and the dedication to quality, I just can’t get around the tremendous amounts of coriander. Mixing that with the firm alcohol prove to be too much for me and it just comes off slightly brutal on the palate. I don’t really like how the coriander and alcohol ARE this beer. I’d much rather they were just elements. I thought this was a 2003 bottle, so I’m a bit mad that I opened it, now that I realize it is a 2004. If ever there is a case of a beer needing more time in the cellar, this is it. Though it’s going to need a miracle to meld all of that coriander in to something more palateable. Definitely giving AleSmith the benefit of the doubt though, and my score reflects that potential. Will revisit and rerate in a couple years.

Pours a hazy straw gold, lots of carbonation with a perpetual 1 finger head. Aroma of orange peel, coriander and juicy pears. Taste follows the nose but is a bit too sweet. Mouthfeel is too carbonated. Not a bad brew just too sweet and too carbonated for my liking. I’m glad I tried it but I won’t be seeking this out again

Geruch zitrusartig, Gewürze, Limone, hefefruchtig. Im Antrunk süßmalzige Töne. Hefewürziger Mittelteil. Abgang groß, Gewürze staubig-trocken und bittermalzig nachgehend. Leichter Alkoholtouch. Großartig.

Thin white head. Some candi sweetness, a bit of citrus and yeast and spice--just didn’t wow me but very drinkable nonetheless.

750ml bottle - Not a gusher by any stretch, but my glass is 3/4 foam after I poured it! Huge white puffy head. Leaves a fair amount of lace as it falls in the glass. Normal golden colored body. Slight apricot like aroma. Bit of sweetness at first taste before you get overwhelmed by the alcohol burn and spices. Palate is pretty much back to normal fairly quickly, and ready for more.

Thanks to Andy for sharing this. Good, but not great like the others we tasted. Light golden pour. Thin white head. Some candi sweetness, a bit of citrus and yeast and spice--just didn’t wow me but very drinkable nonetheless.

A golden beer with a big and white head. Aroma is fresh and fruitfull, citrusfruits, spicyness, oranges even some parfume; aromatic and inspirating aroma. Taste is fruitfull and spicy, peppers, some warming alcohol, yeast. Medium bodied, lots of carbonation, but it nicely lighthten to body. Aromatic and tastefull beer, however, taste is slightly tense and sharp and simple, fruitfull and strong beer.

Bottle with Nate. Weak orange. Lemon, weak Belgian candy, spices. Dry. Ultimately the flavor was as pale as its color, its body too weak. Watery.

Bottle enjoyed while procrastinating packing for vacation. Pours hazy orange with enormous white fluffy head that stays and stays. Nose of candy sugar and wheat. Tastes yeasty, coriander, pepper, citrus, vanilla, banana, hops, and light wood. Some alcohol and bitterness. Quite nice
