Commercial Description:
Horny Devil (formerly known as Belgian Strong Ale) is inspired by the curious beers produced by Trappist monks in monasteries across Belgium. The beer's dryness and strength are the result of a unique Trappist yeast strain in a warm fermentation. These attributes are subtly masked by the restrained use of premium low-alpha hop varieties. The malt flavors and fruity esters produced during fermentation create the initial impression, while authentic Belgian Candi sugar and fresh coriander add complexity to the palate. Appearance: Bright amber color, nearly orange, and good head formation and retention when properly served. Appealing Brussels lace. Flavor: Intriguingly complex. Starts with flavors of fresh coriander and characteristics of Trappist yeast, then fades to a nice, dry finish. Light on the palate but exploding with flavor. Aroma: Vinous aroma with a heavy dose of coriander and fruity esters from the Trappist yeast. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Light-to-medium body, with warmth from the high alcohol content and a clean, dry finish.

Thanks drewbeerme. Drew let this one sit for two years, then traded it to me. Pours a nice golden yellow color with off white head. Smells very fruity and spicy, can definitely notice the corriander. Flavor is very nice, classic belgian brew. Very nice beer, would love to get some more of this!

A blonde, frothy pour. Hazed. Sauvignon Blanc, subtle pluot and herbal musk aroma, nuanced with coriander and sunflower oil, and sitting fatly on an enveloping softness of alcohol and honey-sweet malts. A distant foulness of silage and plain grain isn’t too imposing.

Candy sugars and coriander embrace. Herbal bitterness has a morningtime freshness; soft, distinct and touching. Gummy stickiness of cotton candy and banana is somewhat overcoming, and the pear and apple skin esters are quite noisy. Unpleasant qualities seem distinctly amplified by alcohol, without which the body might be a bit more crisp and dry to suit the flavors better.

Medium body is softly carbonated with a clumsy, vodka-tinted push of bubblegum and mandarin orange in the finish. Lightly syrupy, roughly washed in vanilla extract and frangelico. And a pistachio smack. The ultimate sweetness of its impression is quite boring, while its kinship with its hero examples is apparent enough to keep it within reason. Thanks Chris!

.750L bottle courtesy of Maniac. Aroma of carmelized malts with some interesting citrusy belgian yeast notes. Slightly cloudy golden orange with tiny white head. Candi sugar, orange zest, corriander, chocolate flavors with spicey yeast character. Full body with a citrusy sweet finish. Definately a very tasty beer.

On tap at the PB Tap Room this beer didn’t seem as fresh as when sampled at the brewery, duh. But lacking that freshness, fresh hops, spice, big power to match the alc just wasn’t there. Still an outstanding brew with a long finish. Poured with no head which could of helped this brew also. Only my 2nd go at this brew so maybe personally still trying to figure it out.

Thanks to Maniac as well for opening the bottle. Hazy, orange color with a decent head. Fruity (orange) and spice aroma. Spicy, fruity flavor. Fairly smooth ending, despite strong citrus and spice flavor.

Bottle on 07/08/2008. Hazy golden body with a medium creamy white head. Caramel, light spice, and fruitiness. Sweet caramel and fruity spice flavor. Medium body with moderate carbonation and a syrupy finish.
