COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

22oz bottle received in trade from TexIndy, thanks again for the opportunity. Pours a couple of shades darker than lager with a 4 inch thick bubbly white head that persists forever. Loads of citrus and pine fill my nostrils, slightly spicy/earthy as well. Taste is mostly pine and citrus maybe some bread or caramel if I strain really really hard, but this one really is all about the hops. Long lingering hop bitterness in the finish. Carbonation is high, mouthfeel is sticky/resinous, body is medium. I’m torn, I really wanted to love this one, but I just don’t. I find it over carbonated, one dimensional and a little boring. Maybe one day I can revisit this one on tap.

Bomber. Nice cirusy, piney nose. Light amber color with a decent head that stays and laces the glass. Medium maltyness, medium bitterness. Body is round and oily but not overly, average carbonation. bitter finish that is well balanced by the malt. This is a prime example of the best that the west coast has to offer. This IPA is assertive but not over the top. One of the best ihave ever had.

Bottle at BrewDog Edinburgh. Hazy amber with a moderate white head. Nose is light citrus, fruity but not overpowering. Honeyed, fruity taste. Creamy mouthfeel, dry but malty and rich with a beautifully balanced bitter finish. A really good example of a modern IPA.

UPDATED: JUL 28, 2011 Hoppy and Malty, not as hoppy as I though it would be> very interesting balance to this beer. Huge fan. Rerated sober this time. Excellent hop profile, Tons of citrus, especially oranges on the nose. Palate has a good variety of bittering and flavor hops. Malts are present and not overwhelmed. I wish this was around more often.

I don’t like IPAs. This is probably my favorite one. Not super hoppy. Very citrusy, mostly grapefruit.

On tap at Stone Bistro, from a very fresh keg. An exceptional IPA, a deserving representative of the IPA capital of the world (San Diego county). Pours absolutely beautiful amber, and the head retains very well. Wonderful balance of citrus hops with deeper spicy resin hops playing nicely together. Sweet undertones. Refreshingly dry and bitter, if you don’t like this beer then you don’t like IPAs. Easily belongs in my top 3 favorites.

Same bottle as picture, sadly I was hoping for more. but this one wasnt a bad one. It just seemed too bitter for the mix of malts. It wasnt a smooth flowing beer. it was good but I thought it might be amazing. The aroma was a nice one. The only taste was the hops and bitterness. It was a pine smell but also citrusy too.

Bottle. Amber with a large white head that settles to an inch. Low bead. Laces well. Big but not brash aroma of kumquats and other citrus fruits, pine, light honey, some dark berries. Smells fantastic. Creamy mouthfeel. Moderate sweetness in the taste with some light malts and quite a lot of berries. Then bitterness creeps in with pine and citrus. Lingering bitter finish gets just a bit window-cleanerish. Plenty of bitterness but it’s not unsupported by the malt side. Excellent.
