COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Subtle nose of spice, yeast, some pine & spruce, and a hint of alcohol. Much more tame than I would expect from the style. Pours a hazy golden copper. The tall rocky off white head is fully lasting and has very pronounced lacing. It is the best head Iíve seen in several samplings. The flavor is both interesting and titillating. Superb balance for the style. Not your usual IPA hops assault - much more complex than other examples of the style; but at the same time not impotent. This is as good as it gets! The medium to full body is both soft and creamy. Exceptional offering, highly recommended.

"Itís Pretty Awesome". Says so right on the bottle, for those of you who take notes. Delicious IPA. The commercial description pretty much nails it. Havenít had a chance to get too crazy off this ale, but Iím sure itíd be a great time.

A great IPA. Pours a medium copper color with a nice frothy white head. Aroma is mostly of hops, some citrus and pine as well. It was actually a little hoppier than I was expecting. A great beer from a great brewery.

Got this one via trade with Fordest, thanks Sean! From bomber. Pours a cloudy copper with BIG tan head. Nose is big on citrus, pine and some floral hops. Flavor is where the malt comes on strong, with a solid body and under-lying sweetness that never seems to be able to take over the hops, which are resiny and bitter, while taking after the nose. Finish is retrained bitter and relatively clean. Very good IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2006 Rerate. This one had a great color, piney, hoppy aroma, and a big frothy head that one would expect from the alesmith brews. They have not let me down yet.

A wonderully well balanced IPA. Pours an amber-orange color under a dense, but thin, whipsy white head. Aroma of course is dominated by the hops with tons of freshly sliced grapefruit and orange, along with some faint notes of honey, pine, lemon and yeast rolls. Pleasing full palate; smooth and creamy with just the right amount of spritz. Although this is a typical west coast hop monster, the semi-sweet malt profile comes through nicely in the flavor department balancing impeccably with the big, bitter hop notes. Finish is long, dry, bitter, clean and crisp. In summary, simply one of the best American IPA,s out there.

MN Ratebeer Winter Gathering í06. Bottle. Faint hops compared to other CA IPAs. No visible carbonation, not much head, which is white; slightly hazy. Not the best IPA Iíve had but excellent initial mouthfeel. A little sour. Body comes through at back of tongue. Somewhat perfumy. A little disappointing.

Hazy deep blond color. The aroma is very citrusy. It has a lean body, with a strong bitterness, resiny and fruity; I miss some sweetness, but itís a great IPA.

Copper color: big frothy head. Sharp spicy aroma, coriander, peppercorns, cloves; then some fruity hop too. Lean body, with dry toffee flavor and hazelnuts; the hopping is good, oily, nutty, a bit resiny, not much fruity. Less than I remembered, but very good.

Hazy amber color. Nice hoppy aroma, very fruity (apricots, persimmon, orangesÖ). Good malty body, very strong, excellent hopping, aromatic sweet fruity and resiny. Well blended.

UPDATED: APR 23, 2007 Pours a deep golden honey color w/ a full, semi creamy froth. Head retention is lengthy. Residual lacing is thick, sticky, and creamy. Nice! Aroma is of citrus rind perfume. Full nectar w/ silky residual effers. It has a thick creamy texture. Malt driven bomb squad. Big citrus with rich, malty caramel flavors. A defined perfume essence is unique yet questionable. Hop rate is high yet it doesnít bite back. A very luscious style. This brew has a mild sweetness and a touch of grapefruit on the finish w/ only mild bittering. There is a lingering dose of asprin taht intriges me. Highly recommended.
