Itís Pretty Awesome. A San Diego classic, AleSmith IPA showcases the versatility of American hops. Aromas of grapefruit and tangerine lead into an abundance of fresh pine and tropical fruit notes followed by a crisp, resinous bitterness. The complex hop profile is supported by a firm malt presence to create an incredibly flavorful and well-balanced IPA.

Smelled citrusy and hoppy. Appeared a slightly brownish color with a large head that was off-white. Tasted hoppy, grapefruit, bitter aftertaste and good. Overall a good beer that I would love to have another of.

In short: One of the most intense <8% IPA. Extremely bitter grapefruit and pine-needles hopping. Amazing stuff.
How: 22oz bottle from my Secret Festivus. A million thanks whoever you are.
The look: Clear golden body with a medium beige head
In long: Intense nose of grapefruit with some pineapples and pine-tree. Taste is just as intense as the nose. Almost too intense! The initial attack is smooth and surprisingly sweet. Not thick caramel-sweet, more like crisp sugary honey/caramel sweetness. But then the intense fruity bitterness kicks-in and is it ever tasty. Iím talking intensely bitter to the point of making faces. And thatís a hop-head talking. The bitter hops flavours we equally grapefruit and pine-tree seconded by pineapples and citrus. The more the beer warmed up the more the pine-tree was coming out and it was drying out the beer quite nicely. More highly drinkable chilled than cold. This beer is a slap in the face and unless your idea of a good time is being chained and tied-up in a tight latex suit this is the most pleasant slap in the face you can get.

The baby was put to bed. We had 15 minutes until 30 Rock came on. Dinner was finished. This is the moment in the evening when things feel calm, a lull takes over the living room, we have peace of mind until the baby starts waking up, until night completely takes over. Iím sitting deep in an over-sized couch. I donít give a damn about New Hampshire. I open the Alesmith IPA I bought from South Bay a few weeks ago. Total floral aroma. Sweet hops. Citrus. All the cliches of IPA talk, yes. But this beer makes me feel good. It makes the lull feel good. It makes the night feel good. This is a damn good IPA. One of the best Iíve had.

UPDATED: MAR 30, 2009 Good IPA - but I wouldnít say itís the greatest, as it has been rated here. Stone, Racer 5 and Hop Devil are all better IPAs. But donít get me wrong, the Eagles are the most overrated band in the world, and they still make good music. The hops are very aromatic in this one - you can practically smell the bottle across the room. It pours a hazy amber with minimal head. First flavor is pine, which dominates, peeling back into a finish that is bittersweet. ON LATER ANALYSIS: This stuff is smooth, but at the same time giving a very nice hop nose. For that alone, Iíve knocking this up a point or two.

Yellowish-amber color with a frothy two finger white head. Strong floral and piney hop aroma with a whiff of caramel. Medium bodied with mild carbonation. Big hop flavors dominate the first taste of this brew . A smooth , sweet caramel flavor makes a brief appearance only to be snuffed out by a big, hop garden taste to finish. A great IPA here.Jan 2006

22 oz. bottle. One of the more fragrant IPAs. The taste is fresh and bitter, strong but not challengingly so. A refreshing aside from the IPA arms race.

Pours a deep gold colored beer, with a one finger head and lacing all the way down. Smells of citrus, grapefruit, hops. Tastes of citrus and hops, nice balance. A pretty strong amount of carbonation with a bitter finish.

well-balanced, solid IPA; nice, light copper body with light brown, eggshell head that is tight and revealingly lacy; sweet yet hoppy and dry... smooth and well; i just want more...

Thanks to xnoxhatex for sharing this one on NYE 07. Pours a clear orange/yellow with a white head that lasts the glass down. Fresh nose. Pine, citrus, grapefruit with caramel notes coming through. Tastes similar. Fresh hops balanced well with the malts. All the standards that you want in a fresh IPA. Nicely done.
