AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Wonderful hop aroma. I could swear I was getting strawberries in the aroma. Golden brown in color with a big frothy head. The palate is thick. Taste is very malty--but Iím not getting the expected hops. Bready with some earthy hops. Not a pleasant aftertaste. This is the first Alesmith beer that I havenít completely loved.

Bottle: Pours amber in color with a pretty nice, just slightly off white head. The smell is much like youíd probably expect from an IPA: citrus, earthy smell. The taste is not overwhelming like some IPAs can be. The hops were just bittering enough to make this a good beer, but definitely not over the top and I love hops. I do notice a bit of a grapefruit taste on the back of this one.

So smooth that I forgot that it was an IPA. Compared to stoneís Ruination IPA, this is a walk in the park. However, the hops REALLY is present, but more delicious and less of a palate assault than its san diego equals.

Smells of sharp NW hops when pouring a filtered dark amber with a hardy head. Hops smack one in the face upon first taste, whatís even more impressive is how the ale leaves such a small and non-intrusive aftertaste on the palate after such a flavor burst. The goodness evaporates off the taste buds and prepares you for the next piney sip with hints of molasses in the back ground. Kudos!

UPDATED: SEP 30, 2007 Clear amber orange color with a big rocky white head. Aroma is really attractive, actually itís fantastic. I smell grapefruit, orange, spice... what a wonderful mix. Flavor is almost as good as the aroma. Pine, grapefruit, some pepper, resin, awesome. The body is just about perfect. Fantastic IPA.

2007 Bottle- Fresh. Since my first encounter with this delicious beer back in January, Iíve been remembering how fresh and exciting it was to drink. Iíve been looking forward to our next encounter with some apprehension. Iím afraid it will fail to live up to the first experience. Here goes...
Pour is a dark melon/amber color with a head of white lace. The aroma is the beautiful mix of hops and malt that I remember although this time Iím not detecting the same diversity of aromas I experienced the first time around. The hops are spicy and citric, the malts are Caramely and smooth. As it pours over my tongue I get the spicy hops and then as it falls to the sides of my tongue and the back it is the sweet malts that show themselves. Still a true champion of the style.

The aroma was a little weak for the wonderful experiences in appearance, flavor, and palate. This has to be one of the best IPAís ever made. Thick, very thick, head with a well balanced flavor of hops, malt, bread/yeast, and citrus/fruit. The alcohol is detectable while in the mouth and the carbonation is a little, just a little, too present. Yum! Thanks Bartzilla.

In my opinion, Alesmith is the ultimate IPA. As a homebrewer, I have no idea how they are able to get such an incredible hop aroma in a bottle. It seems impossible. Another great thing about Alesmith is that they are able to make a beer with a huge hop presence without being unpleasantly bitter. This is a fantastic beer.

Rating #300. 22oz bottle via trade with Ty5592. Aroma: Lots of maltiness here with a good caramel quality. Some light breadiness, too. Grapefruit, resin, pine, and floral hops. Appearance: Dark amber in color and hazy. Off white head was huge and foamy with great retention. Head lasted almost to bottom of the glass. Great lacing. Flavor: Malt and hops present themselves almost simutaneously. Bready, sweet malt again with a nice caramel character. Resin and grapefruit hops are the main flavors, but pine, floral, earthy, and grassy hop flavors come through too. Bitterness is medium strong but balances with the maltiness well. Very nice. Palate: Medium bodied and smooth. Medium carbonation. Light alcohol warming in back of mouth. Overall: Definatly the best IPA Iíve had to date. Great flavors, well balanced, and a smooth drinker. Great beer!

Bottle. Pours with an ornage golden color and a giant head with excellent retention.Aromas ar sdtrong resin, pine and grapefruit. Flavors start of with complex grapefruit, hops and pine mixture that then turns sweeter due to the malts but finishes with some pure hops bitterness. Nice mouthfeel as well.
