COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Wonderful IPA. AleSmith consistently puts out great beers. It is no wonder they are among the leaders in the industry. Nice golden pour with medium head. Delicious hop character with nice malt balance. Big hoppy bitter finish. Great IPA!

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2009 Finally got my hands on the "#1" IPA and my first brew from Alesmith. Pretty dark orange color with plenty of foam. Sweet floral-citrus hop aroma that is very appetizing. Taste is surprisingly sweet with a pleasant malt backing that supports some fantastic hops. This is one IPA that gets more appetizing the more you drink. I thought Bells 2 hearted and Stone IPA were pretty good, but this takes it to the next level. Well done by Alesmith. Wow.

Pours a nice hazy orangeish color with thick head. Itís body is thick and slightly viscous. Thereís a big underlying sweetness to this beer to balance a huge hop presence. Strong grassy notes and a grapefruity piney finish. Sweeter than I expected, but still a great IPA.

Its great tasting but contains too little kick for my tastes. Tastes almost more like a cider than a beer. Its lovely but lacks bite.

UPDATED: MAY 22, 2007 22 oz bottle acquired via trade from Hair. Thanks alot! This beer was split two ways. Pours a hazy orange with an off white head. The aroma of citrus blends perfectly with caramel malts creating a very clean fruity aroma. The taste is similar, very smooth, citrus, and sweet malts that are in perfect balance. Light to moderate bitterness in the taste and finish. Usually I like my IPAís to be a bit more aggressive but this beer was so incredibly well balanced that it did not make a difference.

Had this one before, but never bothered to rate it. Pours out a hazy copper color with a nice white head. Aroma of citrus and slight pine/woodsy aroma. Taste is very well balanced with a nice creamy/fruity backbone that is a perfect compliment to the hops. The hops flavors were mainly citrus and had that nice bitter aftertaste. Very solid IPA from a world class brewery

UPDATED: OCT 11, 2007 Re-rate 11 October 2007 Mostly the same impression as far as appearance and mouthfeel go, but this must have been a fresher bottle. Had a much more pronounced citrus nose and just an outstanding hop character in the flavor. Great IPA. ------ amber pour under a giant foamy off-white head. Citrusy hop aroma - reminds me of oranges more than the usual grapefruit. Mouthfeel is smooth with lively carbonation. Nice citrusy hop flavor with great bitter finish. Overall this was a fine IPA, but maybe I expected a bit more from Alesmith

I mostly agree with the commercial description, though I must say that I got more piney than citrus on the aroma. There were tons of minor notes in there, giving it a very interesting complexity. Good head retention is also an unerstatement. Iíve still got a mound of off-white suds in the middle of my glass. Flavor is definitely sweet and resiny at the start and moderately bitter at the end. I didnít get any dark fruits; maybe the hint was too faint. In any event, a world-class IPA.

This smells great, fruity and fresh (apricots almost). This is one great IPA. Lots of floral characteristics. I like this a lot, and would buy it all the time if we could get it here in Las Vegas. In fact, I think it is probably my favorite.

Wow this is REALLY good. Wonderful, fragrant hoppy aromas waft from the minimal thin head. Very light, velvety carbonation. Golden tawny color, slightly hazy. Sweet, but balanced by an mellow hoppy bitterness. Plenty of peach, pine and grapefruit in the finish. wow.
