AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Slightly dark amber body with a moderate head. Aroma is west coast hops, I got citrus, grapefruit, pine, and the hop variety from Moylands IIIPA (triple) that I absolutely hated. I believe itís either tomahawk or centennial, and definitely not cascade. Whatever, Iíll find out eventually. Alcohol is hidden well, balance is good. Not sweet, not super bitter or alcoholic. Very enjoyable IPA, but 100th percentile?

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark golden/orange with a large white foamy head. Big pine followed by citrus/floral hop notes in the aroma. The taste starts out with a large malt presence followed by the solid hop bitterness that really hangs on. A solid IPA.

22 oz bottle purchased from Tops Liquors in Tempe, AZ. This beer is why itís worth the pain in the ass of carting 30 pounds of beer through an airport. Piney, sweet citric hempy caramel goodies present in the nose. Very west-coast and very aromatic. Smells great. Mildly hazy copper color with a big, long-lasting frothy off-white head and attractive lacing. Starts chewy, malty, caramelly and roasted. Turns a bit more hopped and bitter with some piney and earthy notes along with mild hemp flavors. A very sticky, chewy IPA that has the scales tipped a bit too far in favor of the malts. Either way, Iíd rather this than too hopped. This is tasty and well crafted! I need more.

Thanks Saarlander for this treat. Poured into an English pint, light amber, slight dry hop haze with a billowing white head that lasted the entire time I was drinking this beer. Iím getting all facets of hop aroma here. Citurs, spice, earth, and flowers are all in line. Some nice honey aroma works its way through to represent the malt. Again a quality blend of hop flavor takes over as I drink also. Stong bitterness is sure to get your attention. Very resinous, and stinky from the lips to the tonsils. Reminds me of a wannabe Racer 5. Almost as good, but falls just short.

Subtle nose of spice, yeast, some pine & spruce, and a hint of alcohol. Much more tame than I would expect from the style. Pours a hazy golden copper. The tall rocky off white head is fully lasting and has very pronounced lacing. It is the best head Iíve seen in several samplings. The flavor is both interesting and titillating. Superb balance for the style. Not your usual IPA hops assault - much more complex than other examples of the style; but at the same time not impotent. This is as good as it gets! The medium to full body is both soft and creamy. Exceptional offering, highly recommended.

"Itís Pretty Awesome". Says so right on the bottle, for those of you who take notes. Delicious IPA. The commercial description pretty much nails it. Havenít had a chance to get too crazy off this ale, but Iím sure itíd be a great time.

A great IPA. Pours a medium copper color with a nice frothy white head. Aroma is mostly of hops, some citrus and pine as well. It was actually a little hoppier than I was expecting. A great beer from a great brewery.

Got this one via trade with Fordest, thanks Sean! From bomber. Pours a cloudy copper with BIG tan head. Nose is big on citrus, pine and some floral hops. Flavor is where the malt comes on strong, with a solid body and under-lying sweetness that never seems to be able to take over the hops, which are resiny and bitter, while taking after the nose. Finish is retrained bitter and relatively clean. Very good IPA.

UPDATED: JUN 9, 2006 Rerate. This one had a great color, piney, hoppy aroma, and a big frothy head that one would expect from the alesmith brews. They have not let me down yet.

A wonderully well balanced IPA. Pours an amber-orange color under a dense, but thin, whipsy white head. Aroma of course is dominated by the hops with tons of freshly sliced grapefruit and orange, along with some faint notes of honey, pine, lemon and yeast rolls. Pleasing full palate; smooth and creamy with just the right amount of spritz. Although this is a typical west coast hop monster, the semi-sweet malt profile comes through nicely in the flavor department balancing impeccably with the big, bitter hop notes. Finish is long, dry, bitter, clean and crisp. In summary, simply one of the best American IPA,s out there.
