AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Lives up to its reputation. Love Hollingshead Deli. On-tap there. Wow [to both Hollingshead and Alesmith]. Darker amber color, with darker head. Great head retention. That [what i call] grassy and fruity IPA aroma. Sticky lace all the way down. Great hoppy finish. This goes up against my favorite, and local, Mineral King IPA. Will try to do a side by side comparison. This is great, and so is Hollingshead.

Looks, smells, and tastes like Jesus in a beer bottle. My Sweet Lord, what an amazing beer. Aroma is terribly complex, fruity, pine, grapefruit, orange, lilacs on a spring day, caramel. Pours an amber color with nice lacing, small white head. Taste hits malty and citrus, kind of sweet, then a strong hoppy pine finish. Perfect body for the style. This is an amazing beer. Hopefully my first of many Alesmiths.

Copper body with decent off white head. Floral hop nose with some citrus hops in the taste. Creamy smooth on the palate, and quite bitter but smooths out with some sweetness at teh finish.

UPDATED: DEC 15, 2007 Poured an amber color with a huge huge head that was impressive, sustained itself well, and laced well. The aroma was strong and hoppy (some pine) and grapefruit. Flavor was much of the same with a not too sweet malt base. I enjoyed this one, but have a hard time distinguishing the better IPAís from one another. Re-rate: 6/26/06, similar experience, although the maltiness was a bit rich and bitter, some citrus rinds in there. A slightly off spicey and peppery type flavor (their yeast?) in the aftertaste. Bordered on a chemical type flavor. Pushed the higher malty and alcohol levels of a dIPA, but good stuff, nonetheless. Re-rate, 12/07: Full malt body, darned bitter finish, a darned fine IPA, but a little over the top for my top likings. Spicey/peppery aspects noted by me again, definitely distinctive if you get it at the right temperature.

UPDATED: JAN 27, 2007 One of the great things about living here in San Diego, among others, is that I can walk into just about any ol store (even some 7-11ís) and grab a bomber of this stuff to go. This beer, in my opinion, exemplifies every characteristic of what makes a really good IPA. Anyone can make a hoppy beer, but Alesmith has fine tuned the craft of balancing this one. Itís sweet, but not to sweet, hoppy, but not overbearing, fragrant, but not overtly, etc, etc. In short, it kicks ass.

Terrific. Nearly perfect balance. Just remember to pour carefully to avoid the yeasts.

Got in a trade with cbkschubert. Really liked most everything about this beer. A nice hops aroma, with a flavor of malt and alc. that just make it a pure pleasure to drink. It had a rich buttery toffe/caramel flavor that just spread out across your entire mouth. The hops reached out there and grabbed you without squeezing the life out of your tastebuds. A real beer.

Dark for an IPA but nice and clear. Much more malt and body that a usual IPA. This was an asset to the brew not a deterent. Excellent hop aroma along with an excellent hop flavor. Great palate great overall

Slightly dark amber body with a moderate head. Aroma is west coast hops, I got citrus, grapefruit, pine, and the hop variety from Moylands IIIPA (triple) that I absolutely hated. I believe itís either tomahawk or centennial, and definitely not cascade. Whatever, Iíll find out eventually. Alcohol is hidden well, balance is good. Not sweet, not super bitter or alcoholic. Very enjoyable IPA, but 100th percentile?

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark golden/orange with a large white foamy head. Big pine followed by citrus/floral hop notes in the aroma. The taste starts out with a large malt presence followed by the solid hop bitterness that really hangs on. A solid IPA.
