Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Really enjoyed this even though I got raked over the coals to the tune of $15.00 for one 22oz. bottle. Aroma and flavor were both dominated by strong grapefruit with hints of pine and orange blossom honey. Mouthfeel was full for the style and very filling but with a crispness at the finish. Well balanced and so far the best IPA I’ve had. A sliver more ingredients and this would be winter yulesmith.

Bottle (75 cl) at Café 3 små rum, Göteborg, Sweden. Shady golden, medium white head. Perfumy, piney, and floral hops, on a clean malt backbone, along with some tropical fruits. Medium bodied and smooth. Long bitter finish. Very delicious. Not priceworthy though.

22 oz bomber, poured into a tulip glass. Light clear amber, with small white head. Aroma of resinous hops, grapefruit, pineapple, and sweet malt...just fantastic! Taste is more sweet bready malt, grapefruit, pine, and some sweet fruits (peach, mango?). Crisp medium mouthfeel. Just a fantastic IPA, probably the best I’ve had. Top notch!!!

Bomber from the awesome Smokepot23. Pours a glorious, clear dark gold with a lasting frothy off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit and pine resin with biscuity malt in the background. Tastes of pine, citrus and sweet malt. Finishes with a lingering, but not overwhelming bitterness. Great mouthfeel - substantial but not oily. All told, one hell of an IPA.

Bottle (in NZ). Pours a dark gold with a large creamy head - which carries all the way down the glass, along with some impressive lacing. Big aroma explodes upon simply opening the bottle. Plenty of hops - pine, citrus and a buttery sweetness - nearly enough to burn the nostrils. Also a hint of bitter chocolate in the malt. The palate is both bitter and creamy, the hops dominate the tongue - perhaps too much. The finish is very dry, with clinging resiny hops. I prefer more malt character, but a quality IPA nevertheless.

Tasted 10/05/2009. Bomber from Beerstoer.co.nz. Mother’s day lunch... I’d go as far as saying this is (possibly maybe) better than Pliny the Elder. I don’t know. Perceived hop flavour and bitterness is stronger but it doesn’t quite have the malt to make it as sessionable as ’the Elder. Debating the sessionability of these two beers is worth another box or two, I reckon.

Pours hazy orange with thick, creamy white head that leaves sexy lace as the pint goes down in the glass. Nose is a pleasant metallic-citrus, grapefruit with maybe tangerine. On the palate a huge, mouth savoring juicey-fruity flavor that makes your mouth pucker. Citrus is more towards grapefruits and orange, with some candied sweetness, and the hops also come through with some hop resin & pine sap. Overall, though the juicy fruit dominates, there is some sweetness to balance it out and make it extraordinarily drinkable for an IPA. One of the best examples of an American IPA.
