COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

For a beer with such great reputation and excellent reviews I was ready for something specials. Now, after five bottles (three different batches) I cannot simply find that single sparkling thing that others find so special. It’s too one-dimensional and missing the important link between taste and flavour. Not my cup of tea, unfortunately. No offense to the brewery, keep up the good work!

Poured from 22oz bomber into Duvel tulip. A - A dark gold/light brown color with a large frothy head which sticks to the sides of the glass as it slowly disipitates. S - Lots of floral and citrus notes on this one. Some sweet oranges along with grapefruits, specifically. A nice mix of both sweet and bitter which come together well. T - A decent amount of hoppy bitterness, not much in the way of sweetness though. A nice bitter aftertaste, clean, and refreshing. M - Light to medium in body, good carbonation, very "clean" and crisp. D - Easily drinkable and very enjoyable, very good IPA.

Bottle. Hazy, opaque, almost luminescent orange colour with a medium white head. Aroma is very nice with a big, caramel-malt base, lots of floral, dry hops pineapple, lemon and a little mango. Taste is also nice with a moderate malt attack, allowing much sugary and spicy sweetness, followed by citrus-notes. The hops provide a perfect bitterness, while also being floral and fresh with mango and peach-notes. Big body, low-medium carbonation, long duration, slightly oily texture. Very recommendable!

22oz - Gift bottle from Ale. Orange/brown liquid with one finger of white head. Some particulate. Flower hops, not room filling. Creamy malt, not much power or structure. Approachable but not a standout in a demanding style.

Review #1 (I’m new to reviewing but not to consuming): 22oz bottle. Light amber pour with most amazing foamy head. Mild citrusy aroma compliments lingering taste of pine. Bitterness not at all overwhelming, almost mild for an IPA, but creates a smooth taste that is very drinkable and very enjoyable. Highly recommended.

Bottled, shared with Jaksmart. Hazy orange/light amber pour with an amazingly beautiful white head. I could write an essay about the head of this beer, it’s just really amazing. The nose is filled with the nicest west coast hops with mango, peaches, apple, pineapple and a near perfect caramalt backbone. Do I get hints of smoke in the nose of this one? Weird, but nice detail. Taste is packed with the same delicious and fruity hops backed up by an insanely precise amount of bitterness chained by a sharp amount of caramel and malt body. Velvety smooth carbonation. The best IPA I’ve tasted this far.

Bottle, City Beer, SF. Yeasty and sharp, with a fine golden appearance. Caramel and hop flowers zip off the tongue, with sherbert and citrus also very upfront. Sharp, fresh and tangy, with a long, dry finish.

22oz bomber. Pours a thick, foamy head that took several minutes to dissipate. Aroma is citrus and hops. I especially love the citrus in this one. It’s an incredibly tasty, crisp brew. A very smooth IPA, without an overwhelming hoppiness or biting bitterness. Don’t misunderstand; it’s definitely hoppy and bitter. But, damn, is it smooth!
