Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

tThanks to alexsdad06 for this! Pours a copper color with a medium frothy white head which leaves lots of bubbly lacing. Aroma is grapefruit, pine, and some floral characteristics. Taste is some nice citrus hops, grapefruit........but there is a weird bitterness and some astringency. It’s just not too smooth. Solid overall.

22oz bottle. Semi-opaque copper pour with a big white head. Aroma of floral and citrus hops with a malt balance that almost has a hint of creaminess. Citrus hop flavor with a sweet malt balance and the bitterness lingers on your tongue. Very well done.

Bottle from FlacoAlto, thanks! Orange blonde color. Grapefruit and melon in the slightly perfumed oily hoppy aroma. Very firm oily grassy hopbitter flavor with grapefruit and pineapple, lingering on in the long aftertaste. Some plastic in the finish. Well balanced ale.

Poured from a 22oz bomber and served in a shaker. This IPA poured a slightly hazy amber with a creamy head of beige foam that left some decent lacing around the glass. The aroma consisted of fresh tropical fruit, tangerines, peaches, and an underlying note of caramel. The flavor was vibrant and full of fresh tropical fruits. Grapefruit, tangerines, peaches, and some light mango. Also a touch of light caramel/toffee. The mouthfeel was medium-bodied and had a slight oiliness. Lightly carbonated. One of the most flavorful IPAs I have ever tasted. Excellent!

Bottle. Alright, so this better be pretty damn good at $10 per bomber. Lots of anticipation. Aromas are sure aggressive and hitting me with sweet citrus as I’m looking at the color from about three feet away. Kind of a hazy orange/amber with a pretty decent head. On closer inspection, aromas are thick with tangerine and pineapple with a little bit of floral hops as well. A bit of a caramel malt presence is also detectable in the nose. From smell, my fear is that this will be awfully sweet and thick. NOPE. It’s dang good... a lovely mix of caramel malt and hops that balance it out nicely. Too bad they don’t make affordable beer out there at Alesmith (or too bad that my damn distributors are raking us all so nicely over here.) This would be pretty hard to improve on.

It’s funny because while outside of the fantastic citrus/fruit/sweet/resiny/piney nose and really all you could ask for appearance, there is nothing very distinguishing about this IPA, it’s just a solid drink. Very tasty and drinkable, and I wish I could get more easily.

Bottle that came courtesy of Reluctant Scooper and Beer Merchants following a competition I entered, consumed 10-02-09 Many thanks to Simon (Haddonsman) and Phil L Pours warm gold with a white head. The aroma is sweet with honey and then the hops start to show, also a little yeast. I’m not sure what the hops are but they taste of pine and also have a good citric bite. Really nice sweetness come flooding through, but those hops are also streaking around the mouth. This is a lovely beer, wonderful see -sawing of hoppiness and sweetness. A7 A4 F8 P4 OV16 3.9
