Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Bomber from Hi-Times. Hazy golden/amber pour with a persistent white head. Beautiful heavy aroma of hops and grapefruit with a touch of spice. Nice flavor combo of fruit, hops and malt with a perfect amount of bitter grapefruit in the finish. Alchohol is masked by the hop charge. Fairly full mouthfeel.

From the moment you open the bottle you know this one is special. Cascade hop aroma dominates everything, however the malt keeps pace and is an excellent paring. The abv is perfect for this level of bitterness. An amazing IPA, it could easily pass as a double IPA. Great color, lacing, amazing mouthfeel. The aroma and flavor are almost all you can ask for. The hops shine with everything else strong enough to support with out overpowering. Its tough to be sure this is the best IPA in the world, but its easy to call it top 5.

Lots of sediment floating around in the glass, but thats probably my fault for not pouring it very well. Orange red pour with thick fluffy white head. After a few minutes the yeast all settled on the bottom of the glass and the beer settled into a weird motionless suspended animation. Very fruity aroma with lots of grapefruit, peach and citrus. Some herbal notes, maybe celery. Bitter piny hops with hints of citrus. Very fruity. This could be a double IPA. Bitter hops do overpower a bit. I was actually a bit underwhelmed by this beer, but I think thats just because my expectations were so high. Still one of the best IPAs out there.

From Hi-Time Wine Cellars. Pours a clear copper-orange color with a thick long-lasting head. Lots of lacing ends up on the glass. The aroma is wonderful, loads of hops, with some notes of citrus and malt as well. This is a great beer and what an IPA should taste like. Big bitter piney hoppy flavor with grapefruit and some lemon too. Real solid sweet malt backing which I get as soon as my palate adjusts to the blast of hops. Too bad I have to order this to get it. I’ve got it rated even higher than Stone IPA. Re-rate 4/27/09. Ordered a couple more bottles. Not much more to add really other than this is simply fantastic. Wonderful hop combination with big puckery grapefruit and bitter pine with some tropical fruit in there too. Perhaps the best IPA out there.

22 oz bottle from JimboWood, thanks Jimbo! Pours a murky dark orange with a huge, fluffy, white, rocky head. Aroma is piney, citrusy and floral, with a bit of honey and spice. Flavor has a great hop bite balanced with the nice sweet malt. The hops in this brew are incredibly flavorful. It has the same bitter bite as two-hearted, but so much more flavor. It’s comparable, and maybe better. Another IPA that I wish I could get all the time, but sadly, can’t.

Thanks Hellbilly.Thick white rocky foamy head, murky orange. Smells extremely hoppy, orange zest, spices and I can almost smell the bitterness. The coloration after completely settling is a little on the brown side for an ipa and is almost a light ice tea like color. Tastes very bitter, orange, and really hoppy. The bitterness created by the hops masks the alcohol and lingers for quite some time.

Bottle. Poured a hazy gold/orange with a three finger whitish head. Aroma of citrus hops, with pine notes as well. Flavor had a well balanced malt taste, supported by citrus and a pine finish. Medium/full body with good carbonation.
