AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

From a 650ml bottle on 22/8/2014. Pours a cloudy dar apricot with a big white head. Has a sublime powerful nose featuring resin, pine, caramel and citrus fruit (mandarin, tangerine). In the mouth, you get a strong caramel malt backbone, lots of sweet citrus and stone fruit (more tangerine and apricot), honey and peel, with just a touch of spice. The bitterness is big - very resiny rather than grapefruity, lingering subtly long after you swallow. The palate is sensational, dense and creamy with average carbonation. There’s nothing new here but it’s a wonderfully balanced IPA which is very hard to fault. An amazing beer.

Screwed the pooch on this one, but still a great beer. Left it in a overly cold fridge and iced it a little. Still....Hazy y orange pour with nice off white head. Aroma is malty resins, pine, grapefruit rind and pineapple. Taste falls a little short, but still very good.

Tap at Belmont Stattion. Large grapefruitty nose, tropical fruit, caramel. Pretty, dark amber color, dreamy slow carb rising, good lace. Tropical fruit, mango, caramel is thick and chewy. Medium heavy, with hops as a texture. This is edging toward double IPA characteristics. One big tasty IPA.

simply amazing. tangerine/orange rind dominate this roller coaster of an IPA. One of the best I have ever had.

Pours a hazy dark golden color. Aroma and taste are citrus pines and a bitter finish.

651 ml. bottle. Pours a medium, well retained, ivory head, with heavy lacing, over a clear medium amber (SRM 12) body.....nose is pine, resin, grapefruit from the hops, slight sweetness, toasted malts, with toast, biscuit, balance to the hops....taste is moderately sweet to start, with slight hints of toffee/caramel, moderate hop tones, with pine, resin, citrus (tangerine) notes, finishing with a moderate bitterness......mouth feel, medium body, sticky, moderate alcohol warmth, medium acid, carbonation adds creaminess. This is without a doubt an American IPA. What is interesting is that it is rather middle of the road in all aspects. This does not make it bad, it is just how much the rest of craft and home brewing has evolved. BJCP 8/3/16/5/7

Bottle from Beermoth, Manchester. Hazy gold. Decent, lasting, sticky, off white head. Chewy, caramel malt. Minty toffee. Pine resin. Ginger spice. Taste is thick sweet. Some spicy dryness. Heavy bitterness. Plenty of chew and oiliness. Finishes much the same. Not what you’d call vibrant, but I do like a fusty, dank big IPA.

Bitter with an interesting aftertaste. Aroma is as interesting as the taste. Another winner from Alesmith.
