Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

01.16.06 Bomber. Copper-amber colored with rocky beige head that lasts and laces in gobs of sticky foam. Aroma is pungent with citrus blossom and pine resin; it’s hard to find much malt in the aroma behind all that hoppy punch, but there are some caramel hints. The palate is sticky, almost gooey with luscious resin. It’s medium-full and rather coating for an ipa with lingering alcohol in the nose. Flavor is bolstered by more bitterness and grapefruit pith than bargained for, none of it unwelcome, however there’s some bready acidity that feels awkward. Well, that’s easy enough to ignore by focusing on the yummy hops and enjoying the pleasingly dry finish. For a regular ipa, this beer is pretty substantial.

Bright apricot body with a slight haze caused by thousands of micro floaters. Head is tight, foamy, and slightly off-white. Smell initially reminded me of a junior Dreadnaught. Aroma notes include prominent grapefruit, yeasty musk, and something distinctly savory and nutty akin to peanuts. The nuttiness comes out in the flavor as well and reminds me of really good cashew butter. I think this property is coming from the hops. Or maybe I just had a stroke and the olfaction and taste centers in my brain have been fried by too much good beer on this fine day.

The carbonation in this IPA is borderline ridiculous! Upon the pour, a frothy, very thick white head develops, and active carbonation is visible in the clear amber body. Aroma is floral, spicy hops. Flavor has a distinct hops bite, but sweet malts provide the backbone, and I must admit the overall package is one smooth drink. Looking over my ratings, I am surprised to find so many good IPAs, and this one stacks up with Stone's IPA, slightly below Bells Two-Hearted Ale, and doesn't quite reach the levels attained by my two favorites, Dogfish Head 90 Minute and Three Floyds Dreadnaught. Here's to cracking that Speedway Stout...rating 200 can't come fast enough!

Bottle. Strong hop smell. Beautiful pour and head. Hazy yellow color. Bitter taste. Strong citrus flavor. Proto-typical American Hophead IPA. I’m not an IPA fan, but this is one of the best I’ve had.

Deep golden color with a full off-white head. Purfumy floral nose. Soft on the palate. Strong malt sweetness with a floral hop bitterness. Very nice balance for a West Coast IPA.

Bottle@Oslo Øljunta Olympen Gathering. A small offwhite head upon a foggy, amber colored body. Loads of hops up front; tropical, apricot, citrus and grass. A faint whiff of dryish malts. Predominant hop flavors; fresh citrus, evergreen and straw/grass. Some quite sweet, caramellish malts in the background. Medium body. Strong, lingering bitterness in the finish. Very potent, very drinkable.

Bottled. Hazy golden coloured with a rather large white head. Very well balanced all though it was milder than expected. Very round and nice.
