COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

Clear and bright golden. Awesome aroma - fresh, hoppy and yeasty. Smoothly carbonated. Great malt flavors - chewy-sweet cookie dough. Nice balance and sharply tasty.

A wonderully well balanced IPA. Pours an amber-orange color under a dense, but thin, whipsy white head. Aroma of course is dominated by the hops with tons of freshly sliced grapefruit and orange, along with some faint notes of honey, pine, lemon and yeast rolls. Pleasing full palate; smooth and creamy with just the right amount of spritz. Although this is a typical west coast hop monster, the semi-sweet malt profile comes through nicely in the flavor department balancing impeccably with the big, bitter hop notes. Finish is long, dry, bitter, clean and crisp. In summary, simply one of the best American IPA,s out there.

Damn Im glad my father travels. Aroma is resiny pine hops. Pours a deep hazy copper, with a large, everlasting, rounded, foamy head that leaves lace rings. Flavor is bitter hops with a mild hint of caramel sweetness poking through in a valiant attempt to balance things. This IPA is verging on Douple IPA territory, in my opinion. Well Done. More AleSmith products are going on my wish-list.

Slightly hazy, copper color, silky head of foam.

Great fragrant hoppy aroma, fresh lemon and grapefruit, slightly metallic. Alcohol presence. Touch of sweet fruit.

Tantalizing carbonation and slight sharpness but essentially smooth for its genre. Hop fruit prevalent throughout, but especially so in grapefruit bitter finish. Reminds me very much of an English cask IPA even if it is much more bitter.

UPDATED: SEP 13, 2005 Great beer. Need I actually say how great alesmith is. So many different flavors, it would not do it justice to try to describe them all. ALls i can say is that this is a damn fine brew from a damn fine brewery.

Light amber/orange color with a white head. Resinous hop aroma. Flavor of malt and hops. Seems nicely balanced to me.

UPDATED: FEB 29, 2004 Foamy tan head over a pretty red-copper body. Clear, no floaties. Delightlful spicy-sweet aroma. Nutmeg, coriander and alcohol? Bittering hops too, of course. The balanced flavors and smooth mouthfeel really come together well on this beer. Your tongue salivates when first meeting the beer, the start has citrus tartness and caramel sweetness (credit to Indra for that bit). The finish is piney with a touch of pepper. My only detraction is a heavy plum taste present throughout - it serves to bring down the bright hoppy flavors. A fantastic IPA! They're not trying to knock you on your ass with hops here, they've made a balanced hoppy brew. Too often IPAs are just a pale with extra hops thrown in, the brewer put no effort into making a thoughtful beer with with well-rounded flavors.

Bottle shared with HogTownHarry, blankboy, jerc & tupalev - courtesy of HogTownHarry. Slightly hazy orange-amber with a small white head. Fresh & inviting hop aroma - pine, spruce & orange. Soft mouthfeel. Beautiful flavour - lots of hops, of course, but lots of complexity behind it. The sample was good, but not enough to get everything out of this beer. I’m heading to San Diego in a couple of weeks, and I think I’ll be grabbing a bottle or two of this it order to get the full experience.
