Commercial Description:
AleSmith IPA used to be known as "Irie Pirate Ale." However, some nasty patent attorneys think the name is too similar to another brand, so we had to "cease and desist." It's a darn shame, but it beats an obnoxious legal battle, in both expenses and Excedrin. Don't worry though, we won't change the beer (which is a MUCH better IPA than that "other" brand). It was conceived as an American-style IPA to satisfy the yearnings of the most die-hard hopheads. Its high alcohol content may catch you unawares if you're not careful, but it's hard to resist once you've tasted it. Appearance: Deep golden to light amber color, and a nice beige head, with good retention when properly served. Flavor: Starts off with strong citrusy, resiny flavors, balanced by a nice malty sweetness, then fades to a dry finish with a lingering hoppiness and a faint hint of plums and black cherries. Aroma: Strong piney-citrusy character, with vanilla in the background. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth, medium-bodied. Feels warm in the mouth from the alcohol.

My new favorite IPA. A lesson in brewing. Others who want to make an IPA take note; big hopes makes a good IPA, big hops with a solid malt backbone makes a great IPA. The movement from resiny hops to a sweet malt flavor with hints of fruity esters makes this a terrific IPA.

Sparkling deep golden color and radiant PNW aroma of pine with some juniper. I was happy the bready malt flavors stayed subdued enough to enjoy a long bitter and eliminate any comparison to a barley wine that some of the big IPAs (DFH) now are causing. The taste is remarkably clean with a long citrusy bitter finish and a hint of mint. This one's a big winner.

22 oz bottle, courtesy of Hi Time Wine. Hazy, cloudy scintillating orange, with a smallish but quite stable creamy head. Massive aroma of fresh spruce needles, apricots and grapefruit, both pungent and fresh; rapturous. Mouthpuckering initially, a powerful citrusy bitterness carries through all the way to the end, juicy and fruity, tart and strongly carbonated; quite full-bodied, perhaps a bit much to be refreshing -- this is a sipping IPA, despite the 22 ounces. Doesn’t displace Stone at the top of my IPA list, as it’s just a bit too funky and heavy for me, but memorable and wonderful in it’s own right.

Hazy amber with an absolutely ridiculous head. Like a typical west coast IPA but the key difference was a very mellow finish. I honestly don't get all the exotic stuff in the commerical description but the extreme hops and non-edgy end carry this for me as a decent brew.

6/1/2002: Citrusy, nice hop bitternes. Good tasting IPA. Kinda grapefruit like after taste. Re-rate 12/15/02: Picked up a jug at the brewery. Had to kick it up a point, even better than bottle. Re-rate 3/28/03: Fresh from the tap@AleSmith. Pours a cloudy copper color with a medium fluffy white head. Aroma is hops and grapefruit. Flavor: Light sweet malt start followed quickly by slightly tart grapefruit bitterness. Finish and aftertaste is citrus and pine. 2/6/04: The guys@AleSmith can’t leave well enough alone, they’ve been tweeking the formula...all for the better...this IPA ROCKS!!! 3/25/04 Kick it up a notch. Peter, Tod and Matt have fine tuned this one to the max. Quit while you’re ahead guys, this is about as good as it gets !!!

Alesmith continues to impress. This beer proves you don’t have to "Imperialize" something to make it good. Pours a lightly hazy orange amber color with a thick and creamy off-white head. Thick patches of lacing in the glass. Big citrus and floral hops in the nose. Medium body with loads of hops, spice and citrus and a nice malt undercurrent. The finish is hoppy with noticeable pine and lingers well. Great work here.

Bottled at PBF. Hazy pale amber, mid sized head. Intense shampoo-like grapefruit aroma. Dryish with slim winegum-like cookie malt. Very hoppy and very American beer tat gets in your face immediately. Lots of character and massive bitterness. Pretty awesome as far as I’m concerned.

Pours a wonderful cloudy amber/orange color with big carbonation which produces a decent head and leaves nice lacing. Aroma is resiny, orange peel, grapefruit, floral and carmelly sweet. Flavor is a wonderful combination of NW hops and caramel roasted barley. Has a nice hop bite but not as overdone as many California IPAs. Big sticky texture, finishes long and piney bitter. This would be my every day beer if I could get it!
