4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 Mora2000 (4111) - McKinney, Texas, USA - APR 5, 2013
Another huge thanks to bman1113vr for sharing this bottle at the pre Big Texas Beer Fest tasting.
Black pour with a tan head. The aroma is full of coffee and chocolate notes with a hint of roasted malt. The flavor is more of the same. I get some great, rich, nutty coffee notes as well as some milk chocolate and roasted malt. The alcohol is very well hidden. Thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Outstanding.
3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 jbeatty (542) - New York, USA - APR 3, 2013
Bottle, 04/03/2013. Pours black, thick creamy tan head sits there like icing on a cake, dense lacing left as it slowly settles. Aroma is chocolate, smooth roast character, earthy nutty coffee and berry, hints of cocoa the finish. Taste is chocolate, touch of vanilla, roasted malts, nutty espresso bitterness, on the acidic side, and licorice. Full body, just shy of creamy with carbonation cutting in slightly. Very nice.
4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20 ksurkin (1021) - Norfolk, Virginia, USA - MAR 23, 2013
750ml bottle courtesy of my buddy deftim13. thanks for this top 50 gem, Tim! pours a deep, dark, brown that sits black in the glass capped by a rich, dense, mocha head that leaves sticky rings of lace on the glass. aroma is absolutely wonderful with some of the most unique coffee notes i’ve experienced including mocha espresso, vanilla latte, dark mexican blend, and black roast backed by cocoa powder, amaretto, toasted almonds, and a subtle floral presence. flavor is incredible as well and truly follows the aroma with a blast of mocha, chocolate chip pancakes, and sweet vanilla up front backed by massive notes of roasted espresso with subtle hints of maple, black cherries, and honey coated almonds on the back end. palate is smooth and full bodied with great carbonation and a lingering finish of mocha coffee with a touch of heat. overall, another world class beer from Alesmith, worthy of it’s top 50 rating. can’t wait for the barrel aged version.
4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 Leighton (7179) - London, ENGLAND - MAR 19, 2013
UPDATED: MAR 20, 2013 Bottle shared at Bruce’s, London during The Stouts Tasting, Pt. II. Big thanks to Paul for this bottle! Pours black with a large, thick, beige cream head. Aroma holds some nice roast, alcohol, cocoa, suggestions of mocha. Medium to big sweet flavor, not cloying, rich, well toasted bread, some earth, dark chocolate, burnt earth, some ashes, hints of dark fruits. Full bodied with fine, massaging carbonation. Warming finish, some ashy-roasty bitterness, bittersweet baking cocoa, very mellow coffee presence, light tangy dark fruits, suggestions of licorice, scorched earth. Very nice overall, though I think I like regular Speedway a bit more.
