COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Nut Brown Ale has been through several incarnations since its inception. Co-founders Ted and Skip first brewed the beer as a mild ale (lower-strength brown ale) to represent Q.U.A.F.F. (a local homebrew club) at the Southern California Homebrewers’ Festival in 1995. The beer was popular and well-liked so we adjusted the recipe to increase its body and strength. It was initially released as a seasonal brew named Brownie in the early spring of 1997. A year later, after several requests to brew it again, we made further recipe refinements, designed a new label, and renamed the beer Nut Brown Ale. It continues to gain popularity and win awards. Appearance: Deep brown but still translucent with a rich, chestnut to ruby hue. Its brilliant clarity and fine white foam make it almost as appealing to view as to drink. Flavor: Rich malty flavor balanced by a slight dryness provided by chocolate malt. The hops are subdued but present enough to keep the beer from being too sweet. Aroma: Clean, fresh malt aroma heightened by the nutty scent of the chocolate malt and fruit aromas from the hops and fermentation. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Smooth and lush yet dry.

Bottle from Vika enjoyed at home
Pours dark brown with a big tanned head. Smells of roast, hints of coffee, nuts and yeast. Moderate sweet, quite fruity for a brown ale, hints of coffee and dark fruits, nuts in the back. Moderate bitter finish, earthy hops. Very nice brown ale, on the fruity side, nice roast and yeast flavors. One of the best brown ales i’ve tasted

Bottle at home. Has a deep nut brown colour with a light beige medium head. Nice aroma of walnuts, leather, oak, coffee beans and some smoke and dark chocolate. Find the same in the taste but feels lighter than expected where leather, nuts and wood being the most dominant. Has a silky and light mouth feel, and a light bitterness. A good and tasteful brown ale.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet (Vika), Oslo. Lovely, clear, dark chestnut brown colour. Finger-thick, soft, light beige head that settles as a thin film with some lacing. Aroma of malt, chocolate, vegetables, nuts. Medium body, soft carbonation. Mildly bitter, chocolate-malty taste with a growing acidity. Lingering malty-bitter-sour aftertaste.

Bottle from Vinmonopolet in Valkendorfsgate, Bergen. Pours a deep brown, ruby-hued body, crowned with a medium khaki-colored head retention of some longevity. Nose is nutty malt tones, grains, almond-like sweetness, hints of toffee and soft, mild coffee. Taste is nutty, biscuit-like dry malt tones with hints of filter coffee, toffee, straw and grains. Complex, yet drinkable. Full to medium body, medium carbonation and a semi-dry finish with some subdued hop notes. Pretty enjoyable, but I suspect brown ale will never be my favorite style, generally speaking. I’d really like to taste the Mild version of this, as it was originally brewed to be! :-)
