Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style ale alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

Fantastic aroma of malt and hops. The taste is however dominated in a bad way by burnt caramel. Medium sweet finish.

Bottle at home. Pours deep amber, nose is malty toffee, little meaty, taste is dry, light smoke toffee, sweet. Was expecting a bit more tbh.

Now this is what I call a barleywine! A masterpiece.Everything it says on the label and more. Astonishingly well-balanced. Extremely well hidden alcohol. Hops are aggressive, but do not take the center stage - this is a malt-forward beer. Leather, tobacco, autumn leaves, dried fruits, burnt caramel. Viscous, oily, almost syrupy body. Strong bitter finish counterbalances malt sweetness. Note: my bottle is ~1.5 years old (bottled Feb 2014).

UPDATED: JUL 6, 2015 Taster at the brewery. Amber color with fine beige ring. American hops in the aroma, plus caramel and berries. Taste is malty, not too sweet, candied sugar, dried fruit, oranges, tangerines, a bit booze, but stays balanced. Smooth mouthfeel. Not what you?d expect from a Barleywine, Alesmith takes balance to a whole new level.

A supremely drinkable barley wine, with major hop influence, that cuts through the sweet malt notes. Very good .

Bottle. The pour is a nice amber color. The aroma is mostly toffee, plums, and dark fruits. The taste is big on toffee, great american barleywine. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
