COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it’s meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

UPDATED: JAN 29, 2006 2000: It was the night of the Grand Masquerade...A glorious, festive aura hung about the ballroom all evening as Epicureans from all around exhibited exquisite costumes and perfumes...Wise cranberries sallied forth with a cherry mask...Monarch grapes were scantily veiled by luscious caramel...Prim peaches paraded as proud rosemary leaves...And later on in the soirée, the gates of the hall were opened and a smell of freshly mowed lawn penetrated the creamy atmosphere, a gesture for which many were grateful...The only smudge on this otherwise very luxurious celebration was that the alcohol arrived unmasked and, moreover, crowded some of the other participants with its impolite and loud blabber...A few 2003 and 2004 bottles recently tasted proved to be a bit green hoppy but all wondrous complexities remain...This needs to age a bit before reaching full potential...

The 2000 was as smooth and lovely as a Barleywine gets. Through some patient aging, I found this to be easily the finest Barleywine that I have ever tasted. Can’t wait to open my second bottle.

Fruity aroma, a cloudly brownish, orange in appearance. Taste very malty sweet to me. I only notice the hops on the finish. It’s not my favorite Barleywine, but its certainly a good one.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2005 6/24/02: The candy sweet injection of molassis penetrated my olfactory glands and collided with the dirty-blood glow that reflected in my eyes..
Cream infused cream growing creamier and creamier as temperatures rise..
This was once my all-time favorite beer..
Re-Rate 9/17/02: it started cold and inferior..the scare of changed perceptions..
but as temperatures rose..and flavors awakened..The memories came alive..not as colorful as before..but still quite vivid with increased hoppy awareness

UPDATED: JAN 24, 2004 7/11/02 2000 Vintage: I LIKE IT, I LOVE IT, I WANT SOME MORE OF IT !!! A BIG beautiful beer in a big beautiful bottle. I'll be back for more! 10/23/02 2000 Vintage: Second verse, same as the first! Hazy peach/amber color with a thin creamy head. Sweet, thick, rich with a light bitterness. Nice balance of malt and hops. Fantastic barley wine. Thanks Peter. 7/30/03 2003 Vintage: Pours a deep mahogany color in my Duvel glass. Head is thick and tan. Aroma is fruity and sweet. Flavor starts malty and sweet and transitions to a light bitterness balanced so very well by the malt. Aftertaste is long and mouth watering. Oh so smooth on the palate. You can feel the alcohol warmth in your face.

The aroma is delightful. Very lambic-like. Malty, citrusy, woodsy and lightly spicey. This hazy amber brew has a small, off-white, creamy head with good lacing. The head is fully lasting. Wow, what a great tasting barleywine. Lightly sweet and moderately malty up front. Almost perfectly balanced by the dry, fruity bitterness on the backside. Warm alcohol feel in the mouth, throat and stomache. It’s really more of a feeling than a flavor. I love it. Woodsy (American White Oak?) flavor throughout. Hints of honey, caramel and fuzzy fruits as well. Full-bodied. Lively carbonation and a slightly creamy/slightly alcoholic mouthfeel. A medium length, lightly bitter, lightly pungent and mostly dry finish. Lingering flavors of honey and alcohol on the palate at the very end of the delightful finish. This is, without a doubt, the most unique barleywine I have ever tasted. In the aroma and the flavor, this barleywine resembles an excellent, hopped lambic with a ridiculously high alcohol content. I love lambics, I love barleywines, I love this beer. A very very high score for this masterpiece. Thanks go out to herbjones for this great beer.

From the same tasting as aracauna... The aroma is pleasingly complex. It pours up nicely, with a rich light ruby body capped by a foamy off-white head that disappears with reluctance. The flavor is also complex, with a nice malt base, with a good dose of hops on top. As it warms, the alcohol and hops intrude more on one’s senses. It sits nicely in the mouth. Overall, an extremely good beer when you’re in the mood for something complex.

This is for the 2000 Numbskull tasted on 10-25-02. Nice medium maltiness. Starts off a bit bland, but the bitterness slowly picks up as does the alcohol. Ends up really good. Body is dark reddish amber with an off-white head. There’s some lemon zest in the aroma. I think it’s a compbination of the alcohol, malt and yeast.
