Big ups to qwak for this one. Beautiful nose - plum, fruit, tobacco, rich malt, flowers, cotton candy. Flavor is brown sugar, fruit, pine, cotton candy, strong bittering hops. Awsome alcohol/brown sugar/hop finish. Could use a bit more on the body

Caramel and toffee, with a nice spice background that flows into a big hop character that makes you smile. Raisins and plums round out the malt character with a very nice finish.

Bottle. Poured a small ivory head that was mostly lasting, fine-medium sized bubbles, fair lacing, carbonated, and a copper hue. Malty, sweet, hoppy, some caramel, fruity, and some alcohol. Flavor was sweet, bitter, malty, hoppy. Hoppy lingering aftertaste. Tingly, dry mouthfeel. Medium body.

This starts out clear, deep brown with ruby goodness at the sides and becomes a murky, chunky brown at the bottom of the bottle.
The aroma is deeply malty, nutty, fruity, alcoholic and warm. The flavor is wonderfully rounded, rich, dark, fruity and not too sweet, not too much hoppy bitterness. I really liked this one. We fought over the dregs at the bottom of the bottle. Iím pretty sure Thanks go out to Secret Santa for this one!

Just about as good as it gets for me. Malty malty malty, with a tongue coating hop oil finish. Not too bitter, and packs a wonderful punch. I could live on this, and sometimes I do, living 15 minutes from the source.

On tap @Toronado. Light brownish coloring with a ting of an ivory colored head. Aroma is sweet with fruits and hops very evident. The taste is very light, refreshingly light that is with toffee and caramel notes as well as some fruits such as raisins and prunes. There is a bit of a hoppy finish although I wouldnít call it dry or bitter.

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
UPDATED: JAN 12, 2006 Bottle: Excellent aroma with lots of banana bread, caramel, toffee and hops. Pours a real cloudy reddish-orange with very small large bubbled white head that fades to a ring rather quickly. Lightly malty up front with banana bread , honey, caramel, and toffee. Real hoppy finish with light alcohol flavor and warming affect. Very nice barley wine. Was definitely served too cold the first time I rated it. Thanks to Styles again.

UPDATED: FEB 20, 2005 Well carbonated, tasty orange and some roast, and lovely dark colour. Fruit was apricot peach, and honey on the tongue, well malted, and mollasses. Booziness in finish. 2000 vintage. Thanks Don.

Props to Brock_Landers for landing this beer on my porch. Pour was a darker copper color, with a few white bubbles that couldnt be called a head. Nose was amazing, caramel, heavy malts, some vanilla, a nice alcohol presence. The taste however was not quite up to its aroma, caramel still there as well as some alcohol. Dark fruits came up big, and alot more hop presence than I expected. A very nice beer indeed, but not my favorite barleywine or alesmith brew.

Thanks to TChrome for this one. Alesmith beers, to me, are like women with their ankles behind their ears....I just find them irresistable. This one pours slightly turbid ruby, with a big of-white head. Aroma of malt, tons of fruit, hops, cognac, cabernet, black pepper. Tastes malty, very fruity, with a finishing warming sensation at culmination. I noted cherries, berries, scotch, black pepper, jalapenos, cognac, cabernet, oak, vanilla, caramel, and almonds in the mid to late palate. SMooth finish with a slight astringency and a very slight surfactant edge. This one is great, but Iím not sure it beats the complexity of Hair of The Dog Doggie Claws and Heavyweight Old Salty, or the smoothness of Full Sail Barleywine, or the mishmash heavy hitter aspect of Avery the Beast, but itís right up there with all of them. Iíd love to try these side by side with all these. Then again, if you did a "side-by-side" with all those, youíd be passed out in the crotch of Star Jones. This is an awesome barleywine. One of the best. Donít miss it! Thanks again, Tad. You rule! Yeah man!
