Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style ale alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

Nice mellow honey and caramel flavors. This was a bit yeasty due to someone putting it on its side and this was about two years old . ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

2009 vintage Pours a dark chestnut brown color with mahogany edges and a two finger, yellowish-beige head that slowly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic streaks of soapy lacing left behind. Surprisingly carbonated considering the style and high alcohol content. Sweet yet earthy aroma with a nice balance of sweet and leathery malt, dark fruit and alcohol. Hints of caramel, toffee, plum, raisin, booze and subtle earthy hops. There’s plenty of boozy sweetness in the nose but it doesn’t overpower letting the toffee, dark fruit and sweeter malt notes stand out. Medium bodied with soft carbonation and a decent amount of boozy sweetness that lingers over the strong malt flavors and earthy hops into a warm finish. Dry, earthy hops up front are somewhat stale/faded but the flavor is still there, adding complexity to this intense beer. Earthy and leathery malt compliment the hops befoe being countered by toffee, fig, raisin and caramel sweetness. There’s plenty ofvalcohol sweetness and warmth in the finish but it’s not overly hot and the high ABV is relatively well masked. Well balanced and complex but definitely a sipper. I’m glad I sat on this one for a while because it’s drinking very nicely 3+ years later.

Bottle. Amber pour with an off-white head. Iced tea notes, a bit of raisin and fruit, nice balance of sweetness and surprisingly hoppy for a barleywine.

75cl bottle shared at home. Dark mahogany with a medium slightly off-white head. Full body with low to moderate carbonation. Quite sweet with subtle bitter tones. Malts, caramel, alcohol, herbs, oak, dark fruits and brown sugar. This brew was quite malty but still very well balanced, great beer.

Bomber shared and wow. Poured a clear medium Amber/orange with off white head. The aroma is amazing. Caramel, toffee, alcohol, sweet malts, dark fruits. The flavor is much more of the same and a lot more. I call it a caramel alcohol slide with droplets of dark fruits. This is so smooth I can only wonder what happens to this as it ages. A very smooth alcohol warmth from tongue to belly, the overall flavor is so good and blended so well this is one amazing barley wine.
