Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style ale alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

750mL bottle. Deep honey-gold pour, creamy white head (exceptional retention for the style actually). Nose is apricot, caramel, leathery notes, Froot Loops, some boozy alcohol. Mouth is sticky on the palate, some dried fruit, custard, toffee, butter, oak, slight metallic bitterness towards the warm finish. My first AleSmith brew. Decent. Hardly the best barleywine I’ve had, but still good.

75cl bottle shared in a snifter. Pours dark amber almost garnet colour with a beige head which lasts well. Aroma is sweet fruits with honey and caramel notes and a slight hoppy astringency. Taste is massively complex - every mouthful is different. Very much worthwhile starting (slightly) over-chilled to appreciate the evolution throughout the drink (it is a sipper so this is easily possible). A lemon sherbet-like sweetness with the honeyed stone fruits (peaches, apricots) give way to a hoppy profile but a surprising lack of bitterness which is most welcome with some of the barley wines I have tried recently being more of a malty IIPA than a barley wine. Truly fantastic and I can only imagine the bourbon barrel aged version (which I am currently cellaring) being world-class.

.75 bottle. Deep amber, browny notes, pretty clear. Very nice deep roasty sugary caramels, dried fruits, figsy, slight plummy, malty. Full bodied, slight herby, good soft bitters. A really nicely balanced drink. Good bitters, soft smooth. Dark dry fruityness.

Draft at Ynot chesapeake. Pours a mostly clear light amber color with a light tan head. Aroma of caramel, molasses, dark fruits. Big thick mouthfeel, but creamy and smooth. Overall a pretty solid barleywine.
