Caramel and toffee notes abound in this deep copper-colored American Barleywine-style ale alongside toasted malt and a hint of ripe dark fruits. Old Numbskull showcases malt sweetness, intense American hops, and an aggressive bitterness. Extremely well-balanced, the full-bodied mouthfeel and assertive hop profile leads into a deceptively smooth finish. Old Numbskull can be enjoyed now or laid down for years to come.

400th reviewed beer. Kanpai! (Japanese for cheers!) Big, fat hops greet the nose with a subtle caramel and oat malt behind it. Brownish tan appearance with a thick foam and beautiful lacing against the glass. Remarkably smooth texture with intensely complex flavors of oats, dough, butter, and earthy hops upfront falling into a genius melted caramel, anise, sage and massive alcohol filled finish. Overall, Old Numbskull is truly a magnificent undertaking boasting immense flavors and stupendous balance. I’d give this an A+ rating.

Tap at brewery. Mahogany with thick off white head. Smells of mild alcohol. Super aggressive. Heavy alcohol, then sweet and syrupy raisin, then malty finish. Very full body and flavor. Not messing around. A rich barley wine.

Bottle at tasting. Copper color, small white head. Aroma of malt and sweet fruit. Taste is very sweet, with toffee, sweet fruit, booze, sticky raisin and again booze. This one is too simple and one dimensional, it’s mostly booze, malt and sweet raisin. Where are the hops?

Smaksprøve fra Rune. Mørk gyldenbrun. Middels høyt skum med litt farge. Aroma av mørke plommer. Myk munnfølelse. Smaken søt frukt. Litt bitterhet setter inn etter hvert. Svakt tørr alkoholisk avslutning.

On tap at BrewDog’s Aberdeen pub. Ruby-copper body with a creamy tan head. Particularly good head for a barleywine. Boozy feel but alcohol is partly hidden in the taste. Medium-full body with near medium carbonation.

Draught sample at CBC 2015. Deep copper colour with a thin, off-white head. Rich toffee and caramel malts. Taste is sweet. Full body an oily texture. Finishes slightly dry with rich caramel malts and fruity hints. Lovely BW.

Bottle at Brewdog Edinburgh. Pours slightly hazy dark ruby. Nose is toffee, caramel, resinous hops, dark fruits, fruitcake. Taste is caramel, fruitcake, toffee, dark fruits, lightly boozy. Its like a hybrid between barley wine and scotch ale - in a best way.
