4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
2003 bottle traded with a non-ratebeer member years ago. Thanks Mike.
Aromatic nut-butter caramel with dried fruit; there is an odd freshness to the nose that is hard to nail down. It’s very "bright."
Medium amber in color with a thin off-white head that sticks to the sides of the glass.
Flavors initially of malty caramel, with a toasted edge; quickly changing to sugary dried fruits and then finishing with a tannic and leathery, almost meaty finish. One drink lasted 30 seconds before the flavor dissipated.
Full bodies, medium-to-soft carbonation and a fairly drying finish for such a sweet beer.

One year old bottle. Really nice malty sweet viscous beer, with some bitterness as contrast. Some hop aroma, but mostly plum honey ready aromas.
Really good beer Barley Wine. I am curious when it is younger, with a more pronounced hop aroma, I can imagine that being a fantastic American Barley Wine.

The appearance is this beautiful oak red. The aroma is bourbon/cherry. The taste right off the back is bourbon & vanilla with a pleasant bitter finish. It is a little boozy but is pleasant. Overall very good.

3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
A nice barleywine overall. Pours a mostly clear orange with a white head. Smells slightly of cherry and floral notes. Taste starts off a bit hoppy, but then becomes sweeter with some caramel and vanilla notes. A bit of bitterness in the aftertaste. Had on tap at Mikkeller Bar.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle was a gusher on first opening--lost a good third to my kitchen counter. What was left poured a dark, reddish-brown, with big, thick, dirty white head. Aroma of licorice, booze, dark fruit. Flavor had the licorice/anise from the aroma, along with: booze, raisin, bread, malt, some hops, and more booze. This is a pretty good example of a barley wine, which isn’t one of my favorite styles (but checking off the Ale Smith offerings).
