Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it’s meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Could quite possibly be one of the top 100 beers/Barleywines in the world. The aroma is inviting, but not overwhelming Pours a murky copper with a dense, 2 finger, amber head. Would rate a 5 if it weren’t for the slightly oily mouth-feel at the finish.

Bottle from erzbierschof.ch. Muddy brown amber with a short head. Powerful aromas of malt, fruity, toffy and alcohol. The mouth is also powerful, a little heavy, full and rich with flavors of caramel, roasted, biscuit, jammy fruits and a bitterness that is growing. Liquory and warm beer with a long finale, notes of alcohol and a bitter well present.

Butelka 75cl. Nuty słodowe przypominają palony karmel i nasączony alkoholem spod do tortu.

650ml bottle. Pours a clear copper ruby, with a large off-white head, which lasts very well and leaves good lacing. Toast, hazelnut, stewed fruits and honey are present in the aroma, along with an undercurrent of alcohol sweetness. Slight initial candied fruit notes are overcome by quite strong fruit and spice hops. These fade nicely into woody honey and hazelnut in the mid-palate, with a touch of hard toffee and stewed fruits in the finish. A very enjoyable barley wine, with plenty of class.

Pours amber in color with a tan head. The aroma is of caramel, honey, toasted malts, with a bit a fruit tones. The dried fruit aromas become more present after the head begins to settle. The taste has a nice warming feeling with the fruit sweetness being evident first, then caramel and toasted flavors. This is an excellent Barley Wine.

Draft to taster at Dutch’s. Looks good; a transparent amberish orange with light caramel head that steadily dissipates into lacing. Smells solid; caramel and hops; a bit of toffee too. Sweet, but not cloying. Tastes like it smells, but more bittersweet than sweet. Medium-bodied for the style. Could be smoother, but enjoyable nonetheless.

750ml bottle. 2013 vintage aged over a year. Thick burgundy brown-red body. Foamy off-white to beige head. Massive sweet unmistakable Barleywine aroma. Piny resinous hop covered malts. Molasses, sweet brown sugar, ever-present classic hop backbone. Exemplary example of a US Barleywine. Deep caramel brown chocolate touched malt massiveness. Yeasty and creamy. Just phenomenal.
