Old Numbskull is AleSmithís first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so itís meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

This is a pretty good barley wine. Really nothing outstanding about it and I'll probably never buy it again, but it was pretty good.

75cl bottle at home. Pours a nice clear amber colour, beige foamy head that didnít last long. Toffee sweet and tropical fruity hoppy nose. Taste is really complex with toffee and caramel malty sweetness, roasted malty tones too with coffee and chocolate, rich fruity tones with cherries, raspberries, plums and raisins, champagne notes, nice hoppy bitterness, enjoyable bourbon boozy alcoholic warmth. Lingering sweet, boozy and quite bitter finish. Medium carbonation, firm body, oily almost sticky mouthfeel. Big flavours but well balanced.

Floral hop aromas. Soft, creamy mouthfeel of caramel and toffee malt shows tons of floral nuances, dried apricot, honey and banana underneath, and a fresh hoppy backbone. Long finish. Floral style defines it. Weightless texture throughout.

bottled 5-27-14 drank 2-24-15 APPEARANCE- redish amber color, vigorously poured into a snifter yeilds 1 in of thick khaki head. good lacing stays as head dissipates SMELL- balance of malty sweetness and bitter earthy hops. toffee scent dominates TASTE- at first sip the hops have a bit more sway, but as the beer warms to proper temperature the sweetness prevails. as it hits the tongue you get a lot of toffee like sweetness and a bit of breadiness, when swollowing the hops hit slightly. ABV is masked well MOUTHFEEL- thick and slightly oily, a tad bit more carbonation than expected still very slight OVERALL- great american style barleywine, being that its a west coast beer you expect a good bit of hoppy bitterness but the malt flavor is great. Ive got one cellaring and cant wait to see how it tastes with a little bit of age

Why am I not surprised that this amazing Barleywine is from the West Coast? So many of the beers Iíve loved lately are from CA or OR. This is a delicious after dinner brew, but would go nicely after work, before dinner or after lunch. If enjoyed while shoveling snow, there is no telling how much work could be done. This high Gravity, brew goes good in my tummy and I needed a boost to get through a late Feb CO Rockies snowstorm! Life is good. Proof that God Loves Us. Apologies to Ben Franklin.

Pours a hazy ruby copper color with thin soapy off-white head. Aroma of caramel, toffee, and toasted malt, with hint of pine. Toffee and caramel sweetness with toasted malt and a quick noticeable hop bite at the end. Very nice beer.

One year old bottle. Really nice malty sweet viscous beer, with some bitterness as contrast. Some hop aroma, but mostly plum honey ready aromas. Really good beer Barley Wine. I am curious when it is younger, with a more pronounced hop aroma, I can imagine that being a fantastic American Barley Wine.
