Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it’s meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

FROM NOTES: October 31, ’13. From a From a750 ml. bottle into a Spiegelau tulip. A: WOW! Bready, spicy, and bold with the alcohol. Subdued anise-type spices, strong pine notes and some citrus hop notes. A: Maple brown body with a nice yellowed paper head. Nice retention and great lace. T: I would call the taste "strong" as it carries big hops and big malts that balance out in this very rich caramel and toffee sweetness with a substantial alcohol burn. P: Full body and medium carbonation. O: Overall a good representation of the style, though the hops are a bit strong for my tastes.

Bottle at Kaisla, Helsinki. Pours reddish mahogany with a little head. The aroma is very intense; ripe fruits, fudge, nuts, caramel and toasty, sweet maltiness provide a rich mix. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, yet perfectly balanced as hoppy bitterness rises in the finish to a prominent level. Caramel, ripe fruits and toffee dominate but leave room for hoppier notes as well. The palate is full bodied, sticky and fairly flat. Great ale all in all.

Appearance is amber/ orangey, fairly opaque, a one finger beige bubbly head, leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is malty, boozy, hint of chocolate malt, orange peel, fruity, biscuity, caramel, toffee, Christmas pudding hints, smells big. Taste- bitter fruits, orange peel, some raisin, hop resins, cinnamon and ’winter spice’, peppery, caramel, some honey, lengthy finish with plenty of booze at the end, but the alcohol is quite understated for 11%. Nicely carbonated, a bit oily in the mouth. An earthy nutiness emerges as it warms. Excellent stuff.
