COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Bottle conditioned.
Old Numbskull is AleSmith’s first barley wine offering. You may find the name "Old Numbskull" curious. Barley wine has its origins in England and tradition is to begin the name with "Old": Old Nick, Old Sampson, Old Jock, etc. Tongue-in-cheek is often the spirit in naming a barley wine. After drinking a glass or two, you may agree that Old Numbskull feels like a fitting description. It also reminds us of the Three Stooges, one of the greatest comedy teams of all time, so it’s meant to bring a smile even before the first taste. Exotic fruit aromas, along with clean ethanol, caramel, honey and toasty notes are present in the nose. At five months of age, the Numbskull flavor begins malty and the hops become more evident from the middle to the finish and linger nicely in the aftertaste. The aroma notes also show themselves in the flavor.

Cloudy caramel brown pour with a 2 finger, creamy khaki head that has great retention. Aroma is hug on toffee and caramel, sharp fruity esters and citrus hops, beyond that some nice toasty notes, bready yeast, molasses, licorice, fig, dark fruit and light sweet woody notes. Flavor is full of toffee, and toast up front, then some caramel/burnt sugar come in, then, nice raisiny dark fruit, earthy and citrusy hops, tree fruit, bread pudding and sweet, oily citrus notes to the finish. Creamy to oily feel on entry, chewy and creamy after that until the somewhat dry, ever so slightly astringent finish. Really good stuff, very smooth and inviting for such a full flavored, strong and young Barley Wine, the trade off is that it might not be as complex and interesting as some of it’s contemporaries. That’s not to say it’s one dimensional, by any means, and it is quite delicious, it just lacks a little depth, though it makes up for it by just being really tasty.

Bottle at Kaisla, Helsinki. Pours reddish mahogany with a little head. The aroma is very intense; ripe fruits, fudge, nuts, caramel and toasty, sweet maltiness provide a rich mix. Taste is medium to heavy sweet, yet perfectly balanced as hoppy bitterness rises in the finish to a prominent level. Caramel, ripe fruits and toffee dominate but leave room for hoppier notes as well. The palate is full bodied, sticky and fairly flat. Great ale all in all.

hohops (357) - Kent, ENGLAND - DEC 16, 2014
Appearance is amber/ orangey, fairly opaque, a one finger beige bubbly head, leaves a bit of lacing. Aroma is malty, boozy, hint of chocolate malt, orange peel, fruity, biscuity, caramel, toffee, Christmas pudding hints, smells big. Taste- bitter fruits, orange peel, some raisin, hop resins, cinnamon and ’winter spice’, peppery, caramel, some honey, lengthy finish with plenty of booze at the end, but the alcohol is quite understated for 11%. Nicely carbonated, a bit oily in the mouth. An earthy nutiness emerges as it warms. Excellent stuff.

Bottle shared with Bug, Poet, John and Sanj. Dark amber colour with no real head to speak of. Big toffee and caramel aroma with ripe fruit notes. Strong body with dense caramel flavour, fruits, alcohol. Not that complex but delicious.
