5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 20/20
750ml bottle - Herring Creek beer tasting
It’s been awhile since I had a beer this stunning. I’ve had the opportunity to have the regular Speedway and it’s always a pleasure to consume, but this is a showcase of what barrel aging can do to an already fantastic beer.
The beer pours out a basically perfect pour. At least a perfect pour to me. Completely black, dense light brown head, long lasting. An aroma just bursting at the seams with depth and complexity. Notes of bourbob, wood, anise, toffee, brown sugar, roastd malts, Tootsie Rolls, malt balls, milk chocolate, molasses...incredible.
The flavor profile echoes the aroma, but the intensity of the flavor is unmatched. Alcohol is much more present in the flavor (as expected) than the aroma, but even then it mixes well with the other flavors. Everything is so damned well balaced it’s amazing. Mouthfeel is oily, creamy, dense. The beer just coats and clings to the glass and mouth like no other beer I’ve had before.
Simply put, this beer has everything that I want and look for in an imperial stout. It’s created amazingly well, and the time it spent in the bourbon barrel worked incredibly well. I cannot recommend this beer, if you can find it, enough.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
2014 vintage. this was incredibly disappointing. how can a superior non-ba stout like speedway actually deteriorate upon contact with a bourbon barrel? what kind of wal-mart brand of bourbon was sitting in those barrels?
aroma: bourbon, some oak. non-descript bourbon and oak. appearance: dark black w/ creamy brown head. taste is just bourbon and oak. not much chocolate. no coffee. little vanilla.

Bottle shared at the RBESG 2014, grand tasting 10/08/2014 Craft Beer Co Clerkenwell. Huges thanks to Bruce for this one. Aroma is big chocolate, rich dark chocolate, layered in oak and bourbon booze. Viscous oily, opaque black with a lasting medium tan head. Flavour is toasted coconut, vanilla bean and oak, rich dark choclate and smooth deept raost. Nicely integrated Barrel character really adds to the base beer. Palate is Thick and velvety, smooth carbonation and hint of sweetness.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pours black with a medium tan head. Very nice pitch black that’s kinda matte black. Aromas of chocolate, coffee, bourbon, vanilla, muscovado sugar, slight alcohol fumes and some slight berry tartness. Taste is incredible! Complex, yet amazingly well integrated: chocolate, coffee, bourbon, slight vanilla, muscovado sugar, some hints of berry tartness. Mouthfeel is smooth and velvety with almost no carbonation. Just bloody amazing!

4.5 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Un liquoreux festin caféine aux assauts décadents de bourbon et de chocolat noir et gras. L’amertume est longue mais ne bouscule pas. Dessert incontournable.

4.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Pretty straight bourbon smell. Full body with low carbonation but not what I would call thick or oily. Taste is nice chocolatey, malty, and bourbon.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
2012 vintage bottle, poured into snifter glass. Appearance is jet black, minimal tan head that quickly fades to a ring, leaving some swirls of lacing. Nice legs on this beer as well. Aromas are dominated by bourbon. Light hints of roast, coffee and chocolate linger...but, the sting of bourbon keeps coming forward. The taste is more subdued than I expected in terms of the barrel inflection. Nice balance between a creamy chocolate and bitter coffee backbone. Nice roasted notes blend with the bourbon barrel character and harmonizes nicely with some oak, vanilla and slight alcohol notes.
