4.7 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 19/20 wetherel (1836) - Encinitas, California, USA - NOV 11, 2009
On tap at OBrien’s. 5oz pour for $5 filled to the brim of a 5oz taster glass. Some spilled onto my fingers for a nice lingering malty smell for the next couple of hours. Midnight black pour with modest carbonation forming a small dark tan head. The aroma/taste is coffee, coffee and more coffee. Despite the huge coffee presence, there was no bitterness, just wonderful well-made espresso coffee flavor. Lots and lots body gives the illusion of sweetness, though actually leans to the dry side, giving high drinkability. I sipped about half the glass, then drank the rest quickly. Certainly better than regular speedway, and probably on par with double-coffee speedway. Hard for me say, but I would guess a good bottle of BA speedway is better. Wonderful. Sad to see an empty glass.

(on tap rbsg 08 at alesmith)black body with a small light brown head.the aroma is much like the original speedway, only with a bit more coffee in the nose.flavor is much of the same although id say the coffee is smoother in this batch compared to the org. speedway.when it comes to coffee stouts,or any other beer for that matter,it really doesnt get any better than this.

Bottle. Opaque black pour with thick tan foam, very pretty. Aroma is a bit destabilizing. I was expecting a nice roasty coffee aroma, instead I get a really weird vegetal bomb like wet grass. After a couple of sniffs, things start to settle down and I perceive some chocolate/fudge and light, unroasted coffee notes. Still, the whole thing is a bit disturbing. Taste is more inline with what you’d expect from a coffee stout except this one was super bitter, lots of roasted coffee bitterness, acrid and somewhat unpleasant. Drinkable, but very difficult - I couldn’t tackle a 750 by myself, that’s for sure.

Draft at RBWG. Pours viscous black, thin tan head, spotty lacing. Nose is big, sweet coffee, chocolate, big tar and smoke. Still smells sweet despite all the dark/bitter/roasty/smoky things going on. Flavours are quite dry - outstanding mouthfeel, so oily, tarry, ashy, God DAMN! Balanced, dry, yet decadent. What else would you really expect?

Thanks for sharing Dak and Co.!
Appearance: Pours a midnight brown with a luxurious creamy frothy head.
Aroma: Huge amounts of fresh ground coffee, milk and dark chocolate and vanilla bean.
Taste: Prepared coffee, vanilla, espresso beans. Finishes with coffee and a bit of hop spice.
Mouthfeel: Thick, silky, and moderately carbonated.
Overall: The coffee in this was far more pronounced than the regular run of Alesmith Speedway Stout. Most of the time, I think coffee beers miss the mark, and get a spent grind flavor. This was not the case. The aroma was so huge and the flavor was so huge, and hit the mark perfectly. Speaking with other lucky bastards who have had this version of Speedway claimed the coffee was ratcheted up a bit in this batch. No complaints here!

Bottle thanks to mashmaster. Thanks! Poured a really dark black, not much head. Aroma is nice, rounded, smooth, smoky coffee. Very rich. Very earthy and semi-sweet in the taste. Nice beer for certain.

On tap at RBSG 08. Totally black color with a very dark mocha head. Dense and sticky foam adorns the glass. Nose is zesty roasted coffee with a complex chocolate/alcohol note. Flavor is deep semisweet chocolate with an incredible roasted zing. Apparently you get what you pay for with the coffee in this beer, because it’s beautifully complex and rich, and unlike any coffee or coffee beer I’ve ever had. Very thick and luxurious on the palate. Warming with a nice medium finish.

Bottle, thanks Alex! Pours dark brown/black, with a brown head. Aroma is coffee, chocolate and roasted malt, with lesser amounts of dark fruit and smoke. Flavor is coffee, roasted malt, alcohol, and chocolate. Creamy body is on the heavy side, Slightly bitter finish.

UPDATED: NOV 21, 2009 Yeah! SOOOO much better than the standard Speedway. Pours almost black with a finger thick tan head. Nose of rich coffee and chocolate along with some roasted malt. The flavor is even smoother, with the coffee standing out over the rest. Extremely smooth with a creamy mouthfeel. Very little sign of any alcohol.
