Smell is surprisingly subdued, but primarily a nice, potent black coffee. Also contains touches of booze and butterscotch (I’m admitted stuffy today, but that’s what I smelled). Pours a thick pitch black liquid capped by a thin bubbly dark tan head that just barely clings to the glass.
Flavor is potent with the Ryan Brothers coffee and warmth from the high ABV. Fades through to a nice tart fruit flavor and ends just a bit sweet and smoky. Incredibly creamy and smooth mouthfeel, and very drinkable for such a big beer. chispito (18), California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Nov 17, 2009 Far and away the most substantial beer I’ve had. There’s just a lot going on here. Coffee dominates the aroma, which isn’t terribly strong, and dominates the taste even more. Very thick, but not cloying. Coffee, chocolate, smoke, and just a bit of fruit. This is a fine beer, but be careful that you don’t overdo it. yumyum (122), barrie, Ontario, Canada
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 overall a very fine brew. In tasting against darklord and narke stormaktsporter was a little disappointed. Not quite as complex in terms of flavour profile compared to the others. Predominant coffee on the nose and flavour. Also some bitter chocolate flavour Palate sets this beer apart from others, smooth and easy to drink. Similar flavour profile to peche mortel and founders breakfast. A fine brew for certain just not as standoutish as I had hoped Sean9689 (44), St. Louis, Missouri, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 16, 2009 A - Pours black as night with a tan head into my Dogfish Head shifter. Not too much lacing left behind with small tan bubbles on the top and around the rim.
S - Milk chocolate, coffee/espresso, and a small hint of the 12% ABV but not too much.
T - Chocolate covered coffee beans with some alcohol on the finish. I imagine the alcohol would appear less as this bottle ages but really don’t mind it.
M- Medium bodied, rich and thick with some slight carbonation, very nice but I would prefer a fuller bodied.
D- I split this bottle with my neighbor and I doubt I’d be able to finish the entire bomber myself. With a year or more of age, I can imagine this stout will drastically improve. Stuedmaster (11), San Diego, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 3/5 | 9/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 14, 2009 OMG, this was worth the wait. What a chocolately, caramelly, coffee delight! Pours oily dark brown, almost black, the head was small on this one, probably too young, but did leave nice lacing. Flavor is rich bittersweet chocolate with coffee and roasted nuts. So smooth for such a high ABV, with very little alcohol burn. It warms me up and sends tingles up my spine, what a treat! keidjxz (55), Irvine, California, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 13, 2009 Pour’s black with a dark brown head and an aroma of strong black coffee. Sweet flavor with an intense bitter coffee aftertaste that grows and grows as it is enthusiastically consumed. heavy (835), Split, Croatia
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 10/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Nov 13, 2009 31/10 A 0.75 l bottle courtesy of ogivlado, huge thanks for sharing this! It poured oil black body with medium brown head. Weaker, but nice aroma of some caramel and coffee, ranging from roasted to sweet cappuccino. Unbelievably good coffee profile in the flavor, enriched with caramel and toffee. Not overly complex, but it doesn’t change its quality. Very slight alcohol noted here, somewhat more in the finish, but at this ABV it should be felt more. Dangerously drinkable, yet full bodied with oily palate. Long and pleasant finish, bittersweet, again with that amazing coffee. I didn’t hear for the beer before, so was really objective, coffee things in beer aren’t really my thing, which makes this even more fantastic! wavers1 (129), novato, California, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | Nov 10, 2009 speedway stout, one of the greats, it is what it is, nuff said. i put a fresh nug in this one and it added a nice dimension to the brew. some extra ’hoppiness’, though it may have masked a part of the aroma.
