Speedway Stoutís ominous, pitch-black appearance has become a hallmark of this modern-day classic. Chocolate and roasted malts dominate the flavor, supported by notes of dark fruit, toffee, and caramel. A healthy dose of locally-roasted coffee from Ryan Bros. Coffee, Inc. added to each batch brings out the beerís dark chocolate flavors and enhances its drinkability. Despite its intensity, Speedway Stoutís fine carbonation and creamy mouthfeel make it very smooth and surprisingly easy to drink. This beer ages very well and will continue to mature for many years to come.

750ml bottle. Pours an opaque pitch black with a medium, creamy, long lasting, brown head that leaves plenty of lacing. Sweet aroma of roasted malt, dark chocolate, coffee, licorice and caramel. Sweet flavour of licorice, roasted malt, dark chocolate, dark fruit, caramel and toffee with a bitter coffee finish. Full body with a thick, creamy, smooth texture and soft carbonation. Excellent. A world class imperial stout.

This is to beers as to what ports are to wines. Excellent flavor and complexity but at the expense of being a niche beer.

On tap at brewpub. A black ale with a resilient beige head. Aroma is chocolate, coffee, roast, ash. Flavor is chocolate, coffee, hazelnut. Finish is chocolate, loads of coffee, strong bitterness. A tad bit of roasted hazelnut in there, too. Full body, velvety and oily mouthfeel, weak to average carbonation. Very solid!

0,5l bottle at home from Beergium. Pours pitch black colour, oily texture, some head that transposes with the bottom and fades after a while. Aroma of coffee and roasted malts, cocoa, licorice, chocolaty caramel sweetness, some bitterness in the back. Medium roasted coffee and malts, not too dark. Quite strong and full-bodied taste, bitterness smooths it well, but isnít too bitter. Simple while being complex in many ways, high ABV is unnoticeable. A lot of coffee in this Imperial Stout, enjoyable from bottom to top.

Very dark brown with a dense tan head. Smooth chocolate aroma with minimal coffee. Tastes like 6% even though itís 12.

75cl bottle at home. Pitch black, thick, beige creamy head. Huge bodied, roasted malty dark chocolate, espresso, vanilla, butterscotch, nutty, to the finish more bitter, smoke, leather. Nicely building roasted malty, bitter finish. Velvety soft mouthfeel, medium carbonation. Very well executed, balanced and bodied but a tat too bitter to my taste.

Pours pitch black with almost no head. Lots of roast in the aroma. Notes of bitter chocolate, caramel, anise and dark fruit. Lots of dark roast in the flavor as well. Notes of caramel, anise and dark fruit. Full body. Creamy texture. Alcohol is well hidden. Lasting bitter finish. Fantastic.

I probably had this for the first time around a decade ago. I bet this has come around a few tastings in life. I always thought I enjoyed this beer. Have had a few of the variants on tap as well. But I saw this beer on tap at Chuckís for 6.50 for 16oz and was able to use my little growler (a gift from McBerko and maybe the best thing he has ever given me). I thought this is my chance to really check this beer out again. I am highly disappointed. It tastes like sweet chocolate syrup with a bug burst of roasted and acidic malts. You can see the sweetness covering up a lot of the acidity. It comes off as cheap Hershey syrup but thick. You know how that cheap chocolate syrup has a tartness to it, well that is present here from the acidity. Really messes with the palate. An alcohol heat is present as well. Again, the sweetness covers it up but it peaks through anyway. Again diminishing the beer. I can see why in a small burst, at a tasting, and a decade ago I could have loved this. Or maybe the beer was better a decade ago, I am sure Alesmith has gone through some changes. But at the moment, this is not the the imperial stout I am searching for.
