RichJ7 (1175), Cullman, Alabama, USA Nov 20, 2007 Dark pour with a small tan head. Some brandylike notes in the nose along with dark chocolate and coffee. Rich coffee and chocolate flavor with a HUGE, palate shattering alcohol presence. Lots of dark roasted malt flavor. rather thin mouthfeel for an imperial stout, but overall excellent. A bit rich, though. Best in small doses. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Nov 18, 2007 #500 - Bottle from Liquid Solutions.
Pours a deep, opaque, black with a short lived tan head. Smell is not what I expected at all. No coffee aromas for me, coming out of the snifter. Rich, sweet dark fig like fruitiness, some ripe banana, alcohol in nose. Mouthfeel is creamy, a bit rich, and still not a hint of coffee... Alcohol however, is very noticeable, and detracts from it for me. After opening up for a while, I get the faintest hint of coffee in the aftertaste, but not like I’d expect from something that mentions coffee in the Description 4 times. Definitely not a bad Imperial Stout, but too alcoholic, not enough coffee or roasty malt flavor, and overall a let down. IslandHaole (1035), Onna-Son, Okinawa-Ken, Japan Nov 15, 2007 WOW, after having this in the cellar for, about a year or so, then looking at it in the fridge for the past week, the time is finally here to pop the top of this highly anticipated beer. Black as pitch, no light at all makes its way through the glass. The inch thick creamy head slowly fades to a creamy layer of light brown foam. Coffee, shoyu, raisins, brandy, vanilla, slightly burned toast, a very busy aroma! Sweet & sour, fruit and mineral salt, bitter and tangy, loads of contrasts and complexity....all at once! This is a busy beer and could be overwhelming to the novice. As I say in my ’Beer Thoughts’, "I like my beers big and thick"and this is certainly both of those things and more. Beers like this are the reason that Imperial Stouts are my favorite style! ajm (902), Los Angeles, California, USA Nov 11, 2007 This beer is not kidding around. A full flavor with an odd thinness (compared with other prominent Stouts) makes for a truly hard punch. The dry dark chocolate is very prominent here, with only a note of coffee. KieferUGA (461), Atlanta, Georgia, USA Nov 11, 2007 750 ml bottle courtesy of alexanderj, via kleyland. 2006 vintage, silver foil. Pours a midnight motor oil with a medium sized dark tan head. Good bit of lacing around the glass. Aroma of coffee, dark chocolate, some hints of berries. This a a huge beer. Mouthfeel so thick you could chew. Palate is sweet at the beginning. That quickly gives way to the coffee notes that were present in the aroma. Roasted notes, some bitterness greet you at the end. As the beer opens up, the alcohol really is prevalent. Great beer for my 100th Rating! larsga (2937), Oslo, Norway Nov 11, 2007 Thin dark brown head. Opaque black body. Sooty, rounded burnt chocolatey malt aroma with earthy notes. Dry, smooth alcoholic burnt cocoa and chocolate taste with sharpish notes. Very nice burning sharp chocolatey aftertaste. My RBNAG’07 review then continues: "So fucking drunk. Now sleep." So I retasted next morning, to find much the same, except the bottom of the bottle had a pronounced bready aroma and taste. (0.66l bottle at RBNAG’07.) golubj (1275), Sunnyvale, California, USA Nov 10, 2007 Bottle. Will try again with a bigger sample. The aroma is some very nice malt, slightly roasted, and some dark fruit. The flavor has the dark fruit malt up front with roasted coffee in the finish. Very good. I will re-rate this one when I have another bottle. Sigmund (2197), Hafrsfjord, Norway Nov 10, 2007 Sampled bottle, RBNAG 2007 in Grimstad. Pitch black colour. Intense but pleasant roasty aroma and flavour, notes of leather and tar.
