gail (4), San Francisco, California, USA does not count Nov 9, 2007 in some ways i hate to give something a perfect score... but that’s been my relationship with this bev. The commercial description is pretty much spot on, all the way to shouting out "HUGE." At the wonderful Liars Club in SD they once made me pair cheesecake with it... seemed like dumb excess. It was genius excess!
tarjei (1741), Bryne, Norway Nov 5, 2007 57 cl bottle. Black color. Big, brown head. Coffee and roasted malt, hops and fruit. Lovely. (RBNAG’07 in Grimstad Nov. 3th.) JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 3, 2007 Finally decided to crack open one of my bottles. 2006 (I think - possibly early 07) 750ml - 55 degrees, Black pour with a nice looking tan head. Aroma has an incredible creamy essence with lots of rich coffee, chocolate, and a nice roastiness. Flavor is fantastic - coffee, chocolate, cream, vanilla, finely roasted malts, just a hint of hops and alcohol - this is great even at a younger age! Mouthfeel is simply incredible, ranging from silky smooth to tingly. Just about perfect - The best use of coffee in a beer by far. Alcohol is barely noticeable and the experience is fantastic. What a beer! mystiksc (46), los angeles, California, USA Nov 3, 2007 Amazing stout. Coffee and chocolate on the palate. Alcohol is very detectable but but works well in combination with the flavor. Highly recommend this stout. alandudeman (25), Massachusetts, USA Nov 2, 2007 Updated: Nov 17, 2007Finally found this at 4seasons on rt 9 Hadley, MA.
Fantastic sludge! Intense flavors. Thick and vicious in your mouth. Mild carbonation.
First and last impressions were of coffee. Like damn, this would wake ya up in the morning. The flavors match the description perfectly (see description), all are easily noticed and enjoyed. For 12% this stuff goes down like butter. First you feel a morphine like warming in your chest and then next thing you know, you’re already drunk. This stuff was coffee through and through, but as it warmed (you and the beer) chocolate became noticeable. I prefer Great Divide Yetis flavor a little more but for 12% this one deserves to be king. frankenstein (64), Livermore, California, USA Oct 27, 2007 Dark as the night, with an aroma of coffee and chocolate. It coats the mouth like a winter parka. Tastes like bittersweet chocolate and burnt coffee. AgentSteve (1334), SF Bay Area, California, USA Oct 27, 2007 Updated: Apr 8, 2008Pours like motor oil that went way too long in the engine! I TRIED to create foam on this one and as much as it sloshed in the glass, the oily film on the top was all there was in the way of a head. Nose of molasses and soy. The first sip is a kick in the teeth of roasted coffee, the salty taste of soy sauce, a touch of bittersweet chocolate, and the whole flavor sits in your mouth for a full minute after it’s been swalllowed.
After it warms for a bit, the teeth kicking subsides and the coffee smoothness with more chocolate take over and it’s a beautiful thing. Great sipping beer. Looking forward to trying it after cellaring it for a year. antzman (313), Clarksville, Indiana, USA Oct 20, 2007 Bottle. Pours a jet black with a thin brown head. Not a lot of carbonation. The aroma was powerful. Roasted malts, coffee, a little chocolate. The flavor is intense. Coffee, and chocolate, toasted malts, caramel. This has a pretty harsh finish which surprised me because this one of at least a year old. Very complex brew.
