MadIndian (987), Levittown, Pennsylvania, USA Sep 26, 2007 Bottle from Julios in Mass. Sampled with Dennis Bell. OH MY GOD !!!!! Beautiful black motor oil pour. Nose of chocolate and roast. Big chocolate/coffee/roast flavor. I got weak in the knees. Balanced to perfection. Amazing brew. jakentbc (15), New York, USA Sep 24, 2007 dark beer with tan head...wonderful aroma...smooth and well balanced taste...the 12% alcohol is hidden well. MesandSim (5790), London, Greater London, England Sep 23, 2007 Updated: Jan 3, 2008A Mes rate: Bottle at Chris O’s HogTownHarry minifest. Huge thanks to Harry. You really are a legend. Jet black and totally opaque with an excellent thick tan head and lace. Huge heavy black coffee aroma with superb chocolate malt and really really nice smoky and roasty notes. Flavour is so so very good. Coffee and sweet sweet malt. No way is it 12% there is just a lick of alcohol and a slight burn at the edges. For big o.t.t. US beers like this I usually find them just all mouth and no trousers but this is fanbloodytastic. Stunning balance thanks to some amazing grassy hops. Tangy and just so fucking good. Velvety smooth and so soft for what it is. Ridiculously long bitter dark chocolate finish. Wonderful stuff. Such a huge debt to Harry for giving me the chance to try this side by side with a Bells Expedition. This won the day easily for me. Want more. duffmanyeah (11), Escondido, California, USA Sep 21, 2007 Man oh man has Alesmith done it again. The coffee is outstanding. The full flavored taste of which I am used to in an Imperial Stout is more than I can want in a nice bottle of Speedway. Great beer! Thanks for the 5 gal keg I have on kegerator, I am very lucky. reakt (938), Greater London, England Sep 21, 2007 Bottle @ Chris O’s, provided by the Canadian beer god that is Hog Town Harry. Wow, this is a full on beer, you must be at least this tall to ride, lol...Pours deep, dark brown with an off white head. Coffee, chocolate, malt and some dark fruits in the nose. Roasted malts, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, liquorice and yeast with blackcurrant notes. Nice creamy mouthfeel. Not sure of the next time I’ll have a Speedway Stout and a Bell’s Expedition side by side again. Harry, you rock! porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Sep 16, 2007 (750 ml bottle from <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/Place/massachusetts/westborough/julio’s-liquors/461.htm target=blank>Julio’s Liquors, cellared for 18 mos. after purchase) Big and roasty...Pours very, very dark brown, virtually opaque with less than 1 finger of tan head that recedes to a very thin covering. Aroma of heavy coffee and chocolate, as well as light port, raisins and black molasses. Mouthfeel full and smooth, lightly oily. Thin fine rings of lacing. Flavor is big coffee and bittersweet chocolate with raisins, molasses and light port. More molasses as it warms. A fair amount of alcohol burn, esp. in finish. Finishes with a hit of bitter and a medium bitter coffee aftertaste. A nice beast, still not quite as complex as DFH or Stone Imp Stouts, and the hot quality detracts some in comparison. smoosh (523), New Albany, Indiana, USA Sep 12, 2007 Bottle - huge roasted coffee nose. A touch of alcohol burn in the end of the nose. Body is black as night with a medium brown head. Big, chewy mouthfeel. Huge roasted malt flavor with coffee to match. Nicely balanced, actually. An excellent beer, but I’m not sure that it lived up to the hype to my palate.
