WakeandBake (422), Greenville, Michigan, USA Aug 9, 2009 Updated: Aug 13, 2009Bottle 750ml . Trade from kosko20 , thanks John. A dark black pour with a lasting tan rocky head , sticky jagged lacing left all down the glass . Aroma of coffee , coco, caramel, and earthy hops. Flavor is of coffee , sweet and dark chocolate , dark roasted malt , nice level of bitterness ,creamy mouthfeel , full body , medium carbonation . Nice warmiong effect ,with the alcohol flavor well hidden . Nice long sweet finish . Very drinkable , lucky to get to try this . TampaBrew (726), Tampa, Florida, USA Aug 9, 2009 Pours black with a tan head. Nose is loads of coffee, chocolate, dark roasty malt, earthy hops and sweet alcohol. Flavor is rich roast coffee, cocoa, caramel, toffee, some dark ripe fruit, earthy grains, booze and sweetness. Beautiful full mouthfeel. Amazing! Hopper (271), San Antonio, Texas, USA Aug 9, 2009 Mail order. Black w/ tan head. Aroma was complex blend of coffee, chocolate, dark fruit, roasted malt, & somehow sour. The mouthfeel was creamy & had much of the same flavors the aroma had to offer with nice lacing. Somehow it had a really sour aftertaste like a sour fruit beer that was unpleasant. I questioned if it had to do with it being a mail order even though the Ale Smith IPA that was in the same package was perfect. alagnak (295), Littleton, Colorado, USA Aug 3, 2009 Bottle from theisti shared with my nephew. Aroma is pretty subtle, considering, but all the nice components of an impy stout are there: coffee, chocolate, nice bright hop bitterness. Flavor is smoother and softer than expected - lots of cocoa powder, charred caramel and bitter chocolate to start, with a really pleasant bitterness from the coffee that ties everything together. Extremely smooth, and dangerously easy-drinking for a 12% brew. yemenmocha (344), Glendale, Arizona, USA Jul 28, 2009 Opaque black. Very nice. Not much head though, but to be expected due to high ABV.
Nose is coffee, espresso, dark chocolate, and brown bread.
On the palate is a pleasant syrupy roasted malt character with balancing hops. Amazingly balanced, and the high alcohol is more subdued than I expected. Amazing beer.
Finish never ends. nimbleprop (819), SouthWest, Washington, Washington DC, USA Jul 25, 2009 Sampled on tap at Alesmith. Pours a deep, oily, murky, opaque black with a creamy, spotty, slightly beige head. Nose is all coffee, dark chocolate, toast, malts. Flavor is actually well balanced for a coffee stout, plenty of coffee grounds obviously, dark chocolate, toast, nuts, caramel. Thick and oily in the mouth but still drinkable without being overly boozy. Honestly, when I had this side by side with Old Numbskull... I thought the Numbskull was a better brew overall. angrypirate06 (678), Texas, USA Jul 24, 2009 Bottle. Pours a brown quickly receding head over black hole of a body. Literally no light escapes it. Nose is fresh brewed espresso, extremely dark chocolate, coffee, coffee, coffee, hint of smokiness. I could smell this beer for hours. I would wear this beer smell as a cologne. Flavor is intense coffee, hints of chocolate at the end. Great duration. Incredible creamy mouthfeel with light fizz. Just enough hint of alcohol as well. Coltrane (108), South Carolina, USA Jul 21, 2009 Maybe just a shade below Ten Fidy as far as smoothness goes. Great coffee and chocolate flavor without being unbalanced. No hint of the 12%, this could be an Irish Dry its so damn smooth. Lovely.
