4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
UPDATED: MAY 22, 2011 Fairly fresh bottle, less than 2 months. Agressive pour into snifter. Big 3 finger head, wasn’t expecting that with such high ABV. Taste is typical imperial stout (think founders Imp Stout) with decent amount of coffee. This was a huge let down for being so high on the top 50 beers, I was expecting a lot more. Pretty good though.

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
FROM NOTES: October 16, ’13. Poured from a 750ml bottle into a chalice.
A: Freshly ground, roasted coffee up front, with strong raisin notes that compliment the coffee without over-powering it. Subdued black licorice lingers behind the other aromas.
A: Pours a deep, dark black with a slight mocha colored head along the sides of the glass.
T: The coffee jumps out initially, but notes of dark chocolate and dark fruits are also present. An underlying level of tartness balances out the rest of the bold flavors with a finish of dry malts and coffee and appropriate warming while going down.
P: Thick, creamy, full body. Soft finish.
O: Probably the greatest widely-available Imperial Stout around. Might also be one of the better coffee stouts around. This is one IMPRESSIVE World Class beer!

4.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
750 ml bottle. Pours a jet black color with a massive creamy, rocky brown head. Rich, earthy roasted malt aroma has notes of smoke, coffee and bittersweet cocoa truffles. Upfront flavor is rich roasted malt, with hints of black licorice, dark chocolate, coffee and burnt caramel. Wow! Mid taste brings flavors of chocolate covered espresso beans, charcoal, dark fruits and peppery hops. Finish is smoked malt, light resiny hops and black currants. This is a big, complex Imperial Stout with lot’s of flavor and character. Luxuriously smooth and menacingly potent at the same time. One of the best American Imperial Stouts I have tasted. Outstanding.

4.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 16/20
Black with a creamy chocolate colored head. Smells of coffee, dark cherries and chocolate, minimal booze noticeable. Much lighter in body than I would suspect. Great coffee on the taste, with malt and coffee bitters developing as you wait. Paired with a creamy desert (pumpkin and cream roll for thanksgiving) was phenomenal.

Catching up on old ratings.
One of the best stouts, I’ve had. Straightforward, seriously delicious.
Dark as night pour little bit of khaki head. Not much lacing. Nose hits you with a wonderful coffee aroma. Some dark chocolate and vanilla. The taste was a smooth espresso flavor with bittersweet of cocoa nibs. So sweetness, vanilla and dark fruits. The mouthfeel was especially crisp for a 12 abv. dry and smooth, covering the tongue. Excellent.
