Bottle at O’Brien’s, San Diego. Dark brown cola. Medium carbonation, Flavour is brown sugar and caramel. Bourbon barrel is ideal for the scotch style ale. Woody oak and caramel. Finish is such a nice bourbon richness and fullness, like liqueur. The fizziness means the finish isn’t overly sticky. Much prefer this to the base beer.

2012(?) bottle, sampled side-by-side with regular wee heavy and backwood bastard. From notes. Consider this entry more of a difference from AleSmith Wee Heavy (I wonder what the appropriate convention is for citing other ratings?). Anyway, appearance: similar in color, but somewhat darker head that dissipates quickly to no head. Aroma: rather similar, but with lots of vanilla and bourbon. The few hops that were present are now stale/old, but in a good way. More dark fruits as well. So basically more of everything except hops and toast. A bit sweeter. Palate: wow, even smoother than the original, which is impressive. Smooth and sexy with medium-full body and gentle carbonation. More raisins, plums, and just keeps getting better and better throughout the glass. I would have missed out on a lot of this if I just had 4oz I think. Either that or by 8-12 I was getting good and drunk and like everything more (though the other glasses weren’t empty yet, and they didn’t improve as much as this one, so I suppose there’s something to it). Delicious.

750 ml Bottle of 2012 Vintage (10% ABV). Burnt brownish amber colored with a half-inch of mocha foam. Strong notes of bourbon, coconut, caramelized sugars and dark fruits in the aroma. Taste is pure caramel, malt, vanilla and bourbon with a bit of butterscotch, brown sugar and molasses around the edges. Mouthfeel is silky smooth with low carbonation and more dark sugars and toasted oak in the finish. Overall, an exquisite dessert in a glass style beer and easily one of the top Scotch Ales around.

2004 vintage 164/234 A- Pours a deep ruddy brown hue with a very small fizzy head. S- LOTS of deep bourbon notes with dark fruit sneaking its way through. T- The most bourbon i’ve ever tasted in a beer all the way through, earthy tones, undertones of dark fruit. M- Thick with low carbonation. D- A huge, bourbony beer that has held up well these years.

2013 bomber bought at Discount Liquor - Waukesha, WI. Pours a dark ruddish brown with a creamy tan/brown head that quickly dissipates. Rich, dark fruit, vanilla, whiskey, creamy goodness all rolled into one beautiful beer. Very well balanced, complex scotch ale. If you can find it - buy it! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Wow..decandence in a bottle. So much going on, perfectly melded together in a robust, rich opulent product. Dark berries, rich dark malt, light vanilla and sticky bourbon. Good carbonation and full body for a BA beer. JUst an absolute delight. WORLD CLASS.

2012 bottle. Pours a nice murky dark reddish brown with a super tiny khaki head. Wow lots going on on the nose. Nice bourbon notes up front, vanilla and caramel, dark fruit, toasted oak, and molasses. Taste is awesome too. Sweet dates and plums, caramel, oak, toffee, a little nutty, and a nice subtle bourbon flavor. Deeeelicious. Not a trace of alcohol. Wish I could get some more of this.

Pours black with a slightly sweet aroma. The body starts very sweet with a creamy caramel taste that finishes with a strong licorice flavor. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone
