This Barrel-Aged version of our Scotch-Style ale is matured in premium bourbon barrels for up to one year to add layers of complexity to its rich, malty flavor profile. Notes of vanilla, oak and bourbon from the barrels combine with the beer’s profile of caramel and toffee to make this an utterly unique beer that we think you’ll love. Enjoy it now or let it mature in the bottle for years to come.

Bottled 2004, number 28/234. This dark brown ale poured with a nice tan head that dissipated quickly, eliciting a very malty aroma. There is a distinct alcohol note to the already smoky flavor that leaves a bourbon taste on the tongue. I light up a Trinidad Fundadore and view my spring garden in a California back yard, with magpies and jays seeking worms. I listen to Yusef Lateef screaming his life into "Like It Is." This is a definition of the essence of life! Possible the best beer I have had.

UPDATED: NOV 13, 2011 Bottle 96/222 of the 2005 batch sampled courtesy of Sparky27 @ Hellbilly’s Hellraiser 3.0...THANKS ERIC!!! This one has to take the top honors of the night (and Rodenbach Alexander, Southampton RIS, and Toronado 20th were in the Hiz-Ous)...rusty penny/maple syrup pour with a razor-thin caramel head. Aroma has strong barrel-notes; oak, bourbon, toffee, and molasses. Flavor is sweet malt, candied sugar, dark fruit, brown sugar, and freshly spliced vanilla bean. Quite thick and sticky...WOW!!! BUMP!!!

This one is all about the malt....and such a good complex flavor of malt in the nose and flavor. Slightly peated, real carmel richness, but I go back to all the wonderful malt. Perfect

2005 vintage bottle #98/222 from Alesmith brewery. Dark mahogany brown with garnet highlights around the edge and absolutely no head. Big caramel, chocolate, and whiskey aroma. Thick velvet mouthfeel. Initial taste of smooth yet oddly crisp wood, transitioning to a chocolate and caramel taste, which is immediately replaced by the bourbon and vanilla tastes and finishes with a tobacco and spice taste intermingled with a nice alcoholic sweetness. Excellent.

UPDATED: FEB 10, 2007 Bottle #17... DLD06.... This beer rocks!... Lightly hazy, caramel-colored ale with a small, fizzy, off-white head. The aroma is a wonderful blend of chocolate, coconut, oak, vanilla and sourmash. This bottle’s still a little hot. Lots of bourbon, caramel, dark fruit and chocolate in the flavor. Full-bodied and silky with lively carbonation. Finishes bourbony, malty and bone-dry. Given a choice, I would have layed this one down for a while, but I had to share it with my "drinking buddies" at the Hampton tasting. Another world class beer from Peter! Thanks goes out to sprinkle for the trade.

The Wee Heavy might have been my favorite Alesmith beer, and so I knew this would just rock f*%k’n hardcore. Pours dark mahogany with a tall tan head. Sweet and buttery flavors from the bourbon, that makes you scream "SEXUAL CHOCOLATE!". Rich caramel flavors with a vanilla and faintly smoked finish. No excess alcohol at all, so smooth its unreal.

2005, I can see this getting better in 3-5 years, thats how good this brew is. Had never had a regular Wee Heavy from Alesmith for some reason. Intense brew, dark rich and had a finish like no other. Alc and acidity keep this very focused but still it’s big. Barrel aged nose of burbon is tied into chocolate and dark coffee type aroma. Haunting. Powerful mid palate. Thanks to Tom at O’Brien’s SD and his Alesmith tasting for this. Maybe the best beer I’ve ever had.

750ml Bottle. 2006 vintage. Big thanks to Zathrus13. Big want for me, and a birthday gift to a friend which he of course was more than happy to share. Nose is huge notes of wood, bourbon, brown sugar and sherry. Nose suggests light oxidiation, but nothing off putting. Flavor is full and rich with a huge mouthfeel. Up front tons of brown sugar war with big notes of fig and cherry. Finishes with a slight bourbon note of wood and vanilla and a long lingering brandied cherry flavor. Definitely some light oxidation. Even so a truly marvelous beer. I could drink this stuff all day, no alcohol burn at all and just so damn tasty. I’d love to try a younger vintage which I suspect may have a little more bourbon and less fruity notes. Once again big thanks to Jeff for this one.

UPDATED: MAR 6, 2014 2012 vintage (12/31/13). Pours a dark brown with auburn edges. Small soapy beige head, mostly lasting. Lovely aroma. Sweet and malty, clean alluring Bourbon, vanilla, light woody, caramel, bit of dark fruity, silky chocolate, complex but not perplexing, soft. Medium not quite Full body but not chewy. Soft. Smooth, rounded, and velvety. Amazing Finish has some initial pleasant alcohol warmth that quickly gives was to sublet vanilla and some malty sweetness. Phenomenal.
