J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Dark brown hue with thick creamy head that sustains. Nose is big malts with slight roast and peat, hints of toffee and molasses. Flavor is sweet malts with hints of smoke, roast, and bread-biscuit, toffee and brown sugar peek through in the middle, finishes slightly sweet with a hint of alcohol warmth. Full body, thick chewy texture, light-moderate carbonation. A totally solid amped up scottish ale with tons of malt flavor an complexity.

2009 Bomber. Pours dark chocolate brown with a creamy head. Complex malty aroma that highlights caramel, milk chocolate, toffee, earth, a slight port notes. Falvor is rich, sweet, yet extremely balanced and flavorful. Perhaps what caps this beer is its refined bit of noble hops that cut some of the sweetness and adds depth. I’m a big fan; unrivaled for Scotch Ales.

The smell is sweet, malts, scotch like, smoke like, peat, and fruits. The look is brown to red in color, ok beige colored head, and clear. The taste is fruits, malts, sweet, peats, caramel, smoke, and alcohol. Good and smooth.

Location: On tap at the Brewery, 1/8/10

Aroma: Rich malty nose, lots of fruit notes, caramel, toffee, and earth
Appearance: Hazy reddish-brown color with a tan head
Flavor: Lots of malty sweetness, balanced by a nice hop flavor
Palate: Full bodied, crisp, slight alcohol burn, warming finish
Overall Impression: This beer is quite good. One of the best, if not the best, Scotch Ale I’ve ever had. Really good stuff. AleSmith does it again. I’m so glad I got to try so many beers on my visit, and I wish I could have more access to this one.

Bottle 2005 vintage. A thousand thanks to HogtownHarry. Dark ruby pour with thick lasting cream head. Aroma is, darn this actually smells like scotch! Molasses, smoke, rich malts something almost imperial stout-like about this one. Taste is so rich, very sweet but not too sticky there is a nice roasted bitter (dark chocolate) finale to cut it off. Palate is very nice, quite creamy, full and very long. The only thing I might have against this beer is that the taste is a tad thin, I’d like to try a *fresh* version to compare.

750 ml bottle poured into snifter. Nice ruby brown color with frothy tan head. Aroma of roast caramel malt, chocolate, molasses, bread, dark fruits, smoke. Taste is lightly sweet and bitter, and a bit smokey. Smooth creamy mouthfeel with crisp carbonation. This was a very nice sipper, I’d like more of this!

750 mL bottle from South Bay Drugs (purchased October 2009). Muddy brown pour that looks almost black by the time it reaches the glass. About a 1 inch thick creamy tan head. Sweet aroma that honestly smells like Scotch whiskey as much as anything. Some caramel and chocolate is also detected. Big sweetness from this one as I would have expected from the style. A very smooth and pleasant chocolate finish lingers on the palate. As far as a Scotch Ale is concerned this absolutely nails it. I have stated this before that this is not one of my favorite styles typically, but this really gets it right.
