J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Medium reddish brown color. Head is small. Aroma is very malty and slightly smoky. Nice beer. Malts are peaty, smoky and very smooth. Very well balanced. Nice wee heavy. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly bitter. The 9% alcohol is not very noticeable. NICE wee heavy.

Reddish-brown and very clear. No head and none really expected. Big malt aroma. Some alcohol. Slight smokiness in the nose. Nice fruitiness. Extremely malty flavor. Smoky carmelized flavor. A little tingly on the tongue. Full body. Some sweetness. Slight roast. An excellent Wee Heavy!

Chestnut color with a light fine head. Plethora of malt aromas. Aromas of caramel, surghum/molassas, slightly earthy with a touch of peat. Flavors of light chocolate, dates and molassas. Just a touch of peat to make it interesting. As it warms the alcohol comes out a bit, both in aroma and in warming feel. Almost silky in feel. Belhaven Wee Heavy with a kick.

Chocolate and raisns in the nose and a fluffy tan head. Smooth malty chocolate, plum, dried fruits. Long finish with a little saltiness 4.1 rerate Noticed more coffe and malt in the nose. Vanilla, whisky, traces of alcohol, caramel, toffee. Well balanced with sweet cream and dry coffee. A lot less fruity from the tap.

Once again thanks to hopsrus for a sample of this. Thick malt flavors sit very nicely on the tongue. This is a beer to really wrap yourself around. Quality.

UPDATED: SEP 14, 2004 Re-rate, this is the first bottle of Alesmith that I have purchase in Ohio. Burgundy/brown color, pour with a moderate brown head. Aroma is rich, like prunes, carmel and nuts all mixed together. Flavor is sweet, with some alcohol showing. Finish starts off syrupy and ends slightly dry with some hop bitterness shining through.

Beautiful dark brown body with a head that lingered wonderfully throughout the tasting. Aroma is that of high yeast content, almost vanilla, deep chocolate hints as well. The taste is highly alcoholic with the scotch dryness really sticking out and grabbing the palate for a ride. Did i mention super dry!!!! Heavy molasses and malty afternotes...a very well rounded scotch ale.
