J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bottle shared with friends after the 4th. Snifters. Pours a dark brown with a thick off-white head. Aroma is fruity (plums, raisins, over-ripe apricots), bread, doughnut, dark sugars, molasses, and spices. The taste was similar with the fruits and spices pairing well with the alcohol finish. Full body, oily and creamy texture. Light carbonation. Really a full flavored, fresh Wee Heavy. Lots of barrel as well.

Bottle shared at Manny G’s - thanks to Paul. Around 3-4 years old. Pours deep amber with a frothy beige head. Some old, rotting wooding the nose, leathery fruits, jammy berries. Medium to big sweet flavor, lots of rich bread, dates, a bit of old toffee, raspberry jam. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly warming to finish, fruitcake, more jam, raspberry, toffee. Great stuff. Touches of age at the edges but nice complexity overall.

Pours a deep, hazy, dark brown amber with light just making it through the edges. Nice light beige head and lots of fine lacing. Aroma is mild with toffee notes. Palate is full and smooth, great feel. Taste is delicious; caramel, toffee, burnt sugar, and finally raisins or some fruity flavor I can’t quite pin down. Excellent beer.

750 mL bottle, in trade with treebute. Pours dark brown, with a small, beige head. The aroma is strong black bread, caramel, peat, light smoke, oak, and vanilla. Very sweet and malty flavor, with no perceptible bitterness or sourness. Very heavy body, thick, malty, and lightly astringent. Overall, this is a wonderful malt bomb.

Very dark pour with almost no head. Smoky and roasted aroma. Burnt sugar and bitter chocolate. Fantastic roasted malty flavors. Coffee, dark bitter chocolate. Nice alcoholic warmth while going down. Fat body with surprisingly more carbonation than expected. Absolutely an amazing brew! So very happy with this one!
