J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

Bomber poured into snifter. Creamy head with a dark chestnut body. Smells of toffee, caramel, slight dark fruit, and roasty malts. Tastes of caramel, molasses and roasted nuts. Begins sweet upfront with a hint of honey, settles smoothly with a malty roast, then finishes with a smokey tone. Very solid beer.

FROTHINGSLOSH (4971) - GREENSBURG, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 18, 2014
Sampled on draft at 3R6P this beer poured a dark brown color with orange highlights and a small foamy beige head that left good lacing. The aroma was woody, nutty, a bit toasty and had vague dark fruits and cola. The flavor was woody, nutty, toasty, a bit smoky and had notes of cola, fig, cherry and a boozy presence. Long finish with lingering booziness. Moderately full bodied. The booziness detracts from this one. Interesting.

A dark brown beer with a dense, medium and beige head. The nose is rich and it has strong dried fruits, raisins and dates, berries, strawberries, madeira wine, some alcohol and cold peppermint, hint of roastiness. Very complex aroma that is fresh despites of the richness. Taste has rich maltyness, dried fruits, raisins, strawberries, some dryer roastiness and bread. Medium bitterness dries the taste nicely. No alcohol. Almost full bodied, some carbonation, not too heavy. A very complex and rich flavours, powerfull, fresh anyway.

Bottle, shared by a kind soul, in a location remote of my dining room.
Pours a dark brown with a small head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is lightly boozy with a big rich malt character, some light roast, and some mild toffee with a bit of cherry in there.

The flavor is pleasantly sweet with a light smokiness. Itís got a lot of chocolate malty character to it. Itís really rich and fairly restrained on the booziness, which is not to say that that particular aspect doesnít lend to a nice warming bit that fits the beer nicely.

Itís a style I normally donít get too excited over... many of them are awfully smoky, or worse over run with caramel malt sweetness.
This one absolutely skips on both of those fronts, and lifts, really hard.

Very dark brown/amber color. Dense head. Aroma is pure malt, loads of toffee, caramel, cream. Very smooth on the tongue, heavy body though. Well made, very well balanced, huge on the tongue. Good for the style. A bottle to share.
