J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

No "J P Grayís" on the bottle, but Iíve read itís the same beer. Excellent biscuitty, bready malt aroma. Deep auburn color under a light tan head. Flavor is dominated by the caramel malt, but some peat flavors and chocolate malts poke through as well. The alcohol is slightly more apparent than I had expected, but itís still a wonderful beer.

30/VIII/14 - 75cl bottle from Geers (Oostakker) if I remember correctly, been in my beer fridge for a while @ Cybuís veggie burger cook-off, paired with my wifeís caramel pecan pie - BB: n/a (2014-959)

Little cloudy red brown to purple beer, small beige creamy head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: lots of caramel, ripe banana, sweet, little oxidized, dried fruits. MF: ok carbon, medium to full body. Taste: sweet start, caramel, some banana, bi tof dark chocolate, soft sour notes. Aftertaste: mocha, roasted stuff, caramel, cocoa powder, soft bitterness, overripe banana, bitter chocolate.

Bottle, shared by a kind soul, in a location remote of my dining room.
Pours a dark brown with a small head and some lacing on the glass.

The aroma is lightly boozy with a big rich malt character, some light roast, and some mild toffee with a bit of cherry in there.

The flavor is pleasantly sweet with a light smokiness. Itís got a lot of chocolate malty character to it. Itís really rich and fairly restrained on the booziness, which is not to say that that particular aspect doesnít lend to a nice warming bit that fits the beer nicely.

Itís a style I normally donít get too excited over... many of them are awfully smoky, or worse over run with caramel malt sweetness.
This one absolutely skips on both of those fronts, and lifts, really hard.

Another perfect brew from one of best breweries around. Dark in color and nice tan head. Smells of molasses and peated malt. Taste rich rasin plum, with peated smoke finish. AA++++++

Very dark brown/amber color. Dense head. Aroma is pure malt, loads of toffee, caramel, cream. Very smooth on the tongue, heavy body though. Well made, very well balanced, huge on the tongue. Good for the style. A bottle to share.

June 16, 2014. 750mL bottle from SF. Deep cherry red, almost black. Off-white head. Toffee, caramel, hint of ripe cherries in nose. Lovely smooth mouthfeel. Hints of roasted malts, dominant caramel and toffee flavours. Bit of a medicinal note that I find detracts from the overall flavour. Hint of smoke. As I was drinking this, the medicinal note started to turn my stomach. Too many terrible cough syrups as a child perhaps. :)
