J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy Scotch Ale Scotland's bone-chilling winters command a strong, richly-flavored brew. J.P. Gray's Wee Heavy is such an ale. Named for Brewmaster Skip Virgilio's maternal grandfather, J.P. Gray's is a blend of the prized Maris Otter barley and dark roasted barley which imparts a slightly smoky flavor and a deep chestnut appearance. In the style of a classic Scottish wee heavy, this fine ale is remarkably smooth and malty with background flavors of chocolate and molasses. Warmth is provided by a substantial 9% alcohol by volume. The high alcohol and fresh ingredients allow this ale to age well over time. Appearance: Deep mahogany color, sparkling clarity, and excellent head formation and retention when properly served. Flavor: Deep caramelly malty flavor with just a hint of smoke in the finish. Aroma: The aroma is sweet and voluptuous, reflecting the flavor with malt, hop and yeast characteristics. Mouthfeel (body/texture): Lush, full, rounded, almost chewy. This is a BIG beer!

75 cl bottle from Brewdog.com. Pours deep amber with a 2 finger tan head that leaves a good lacing. Malty aroma with caramel, smoke, toffee and some alcohol notes. Flavor is complex and rich, and reminds me of some good and heavy barley wines... Heavy body, light carbonation, dry finish with a good alcohol feel. Nice one .

750 ml. bottled February 11, 2014. Pour is deep chocolate brown with some red hues. Lasting film of creamy bubbles. Aroma is prune, caramel cola and booze. Tastes of prune, earthy leaf and wood, dark toffee, cocoa and cabernet. Medium-heavy body is slightly sticky but pretty drinkable. Low-medium carbonation is nice, but seems a bit hot with the abv for the style even after a year plus of bottle aging.

On tap at pizza port a while back. Fantastic malt scotch aroma. Not woody but defiantly scotch. Malt dominates, silky smooth some anise and does end with very slight oersted character. Perfect to style.

Barwa ciemna, brązowa. Piana Średnia, kremowa. Aromat palonego słodu, karmelowy i wyczuć można w nim orzechy. W smaku orzechowe, nuty palonych słodów, karmel. Bardzo treściwe, gęste - po nabraniu piwa do ust, sprawia wrażenie, że moża byłoby je gryźć. Wspaniałe.

Draft at Uber, Seattle. Darkest copper-brown. Small foam. Big, sweet, coppery, malty. Pretty damn nice for style. Very smooth and defined body, alc rise at finish. Metallic in a nice balance. Cherries, rosy malt. Lots of flavor. A very nice warming beer.

Botella de 75 entre 3. Color cahoba oscuro. Largo y sutil. El alcohol se nota. Esperaba algo mas.

75 cl bottled. Pours dark ruby rust with a pleasant beige head. Aroma: Hay, pleasant chocolate biscuits, hops, licorice. Some background alcohol, liquor. Malty, toffee, even bread notes. Taste: Sweet, malty flavours. Herbal hops. Raisins, canned plums? Lots of flavours. Nice. Some bitterness with sweetness, yet quite sweet overall with slight tones of alcohol. Herbal feel. Palate: Full body, some carbonation. Hints of berry sweetness in the end. Pleasant malty aftertaste with some traces of herbs such as licorice. Even strawberries. Overall: Not a particularly big fan of this style, but this most certainly offers a lot of taste and flavour, lacks a bit balance. Glad I tried it.

Pours opaque coffee brown with light tan head. Roast malt aroma has molasses overtone. Flavor has molasses, licorice and roast malt notes, a bit on the sweet side. Firm texture has OK fizz and leaves a chocolaty finish.
